BaseCamp 3.3 is here! We are starting off with an early Beta release to give everyone a chance to check out the new features and pound on it for a little bit before we release the final version.

Download it here: http://developer.garmin.com/apps/BC/BaseCamp_3.3.0.2_Beta.exe.

We have incorporated a lot of user requests from this very forum. If your desired feature/bug fix didn't make it into this release, don't hesitate to remind us.

We are very interested in your feedback, please report bugs and oddities you find, and comment on the new features.

This is the change-list from 3.2.2 to 3.3.0.2. I will add some explanations and screen-shots in later posts.

  • Added collapsible list folders and sub-lists for improved organization.
  • Added shaping point support for zumo devices like done in MapSource.
  • Added explicit support for shaping points. These will be transferred to supporting devices.
  • Added support for transfer of waypoint categories on supporting devices. These are displayed in BaseCamp as lists.
  • Added more activity profiles, with improved activity routing on supported maps.
  • Added specific avoidances for various road classes, removed the road selection slider.
  • Added custom activity profiles.
  • Added keyboard short-cuts for editing tools (divide, insert, erase).
  • Added a tools menu for easier discovery of tool keyboard shortcuts.
  • Changed to make GPX files on a memory card directly editable.
  • Changed to read all GPX files on a memory card, similar to how devices behave.
  • Improved graphing of track data.
  • Improved graphing when multiple routes or tracks are selected.
  • Improved layout of geotagged photo, waypoint, route, and track properties.
  • Added additional statistics to route and track properties.
  • Added 'Center on map' check-box on route and track dialogs.
  • Added an easier way to add waypoints to routes (Insert Waypoint button).
  • Added additional data fields to waypoints (such as address and phone number).
  • Added display and updating of date last modified for waypoints.
  • Added display of lists that contain this data item to properties.
  • Added receiving geocache visits from devices.
  • Added logging geocache visits on OpenCaching.com.
  • Added printing of geocaches.
  • Added alternate notification mechanism (less annoying pop-ups).
  • Added display settings to adjust width of routes and tracks.
  • Added support for importing waypoints and tracks from KML/KMZ files.
  • Added suggested file name when exporting (so it isn't always 'untitled').
  • Added more map details for higher detail setting.
  • Added data filters to map view.
  • Added preserving the dialog size for each data type.
  • Added option to reset track's altitude to map data.
  • Added functionality to remember display feature settings per profile.
  • Changed 'Remove List and Contents' to 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Added Shift-Delete short-cut for 'Remove list and unique contents'.
  • Improved printing of routes and tracks.
  • Fixed issues with sending routes to the zumo.
  • Fixed elevation profile labels for Windows XP (no longer invisible).
  • Fixed issue when duplicating a route. BaseCamp will now also duplicate the waypoints in that route.
  • Fixed issue with the data filter not being remembered between application runs.

    Services icons

It's under Options (Ctrl-O), activity profiles, Map Display Features (all the way at the bottom).

Thanks. It works except that the yellow shopping cart icons are still present.

I am also puzzled : on some old routes (created with last version of BC), the beta displays the total ascent and descent, on others it does not!
Yet all HAVE elevation data... And BC beta always displays min and max...

To make sure you get elevation data, you probably want to recalculate the route (on a map with DEM data). The behavior for routes calculated on older versions is somewhat erratic, as you have discovered.

This is of course not ideal, but there isn't much we can do about this other than forcing a re-calculate. But that is a measure we didn't want to take.

I'm a little confused about this feature. For example, I can create a track using City Navigator - which does not contain any elevation data. I switch over to Topo 24K West and apply "Advanced->Set Selected Track to Map Elevation" to that track. Now, if I right click the track and select "Properties", I see 4 fields, "Index", "Leg Length", "Leg Course" and position. There is no indication of any elevation data unless I click on multiple index points - then I can see elevation min/max/grade/ascent/decent. Selecting "Graph" says that "there is no elevation data in the selected track(s).

If I create a route directly in Topo 24K, I have an "Elevation" column between "Index" and "Leg Length". I also have an elevation graph in the "graph" tab.

So, Is there a bug in this feature, or am I just misunderstanding what this function does?

    Regards,
    - Steve

Thanks for reporting. It's a bug. (The track dialog doesn't update after setting the elevation. Re-starting BaseCamp should get you the graph and the correct display of the elevation.)

I am puzzled by the behaviour of the BC beta when creating a route :
I can click in the middle of nowhere, and BC will take me there, but only after a long detour by the nearest road... When "walking" on a beach for example, instead of allowing me to walk off-road in a straight line, it will take me back on the road, and then back on the beach from the nearest point on the road to the point where I want to go on the beach...

It would be so great if we could add off-road pure "jumps" to routes, while keeping a single route for the whole walk... Especially when we walk on small paths that don't exist on the map but do exist in the real world...

Instead of that, I usually need to create several bits of routes, transform them into tracks, join the tracks and go hiking by following the displayed track instead of a single route... :-(

Is there a better way? Is this a valid feature request? Thank you!

It is currently not possible to mix auto-routing (that follows map lines, i.e. roads, paths etc.) and direct routing (you just draw straight lines). That is something we'd like to do in the future.

I don't think there is a better way currently. So it's certainly a valid feature request. We'll see what we can do.

    Thanks for your feedback (again).

You can choose a speed for a bicycle, but it makes no difference to the reported elapsed time. This was also the case with 3.2.

    I'll take a look.

    Thanks for reporting.

When I'm using the Insert Tool, with the rubberband showing, it would be useful to show the hover information over the closest waypoint similar to the Select Tool. This would aid in placing a waypoint and not end up with some nail salon and try to explain why I added that to my route.

Thanks, that is a good suggestion.

I guess you can't have it all with these freebie programs, can you? I sure use the dickens out of my Oregon 550 while kayaking ... it's great fun crossing wide rivers in zero visibility fog, when you can't see the shores! Just following the route line to a preset or projected way point is a great adrenaline rush.

We might add more profiles in the future.

    Hi Falagar,

Here is the .gpx file that will not work properly on my Zumo 550.

It was totally created in BC Beta.

I am using the latest maps CN North America 2012.30 on both my Computer, and Zumo, and I verified that on both.

I hope you can figure out what is happening.

    Thanks,
    Don

Thanks, Don! Hopefully that file will help us pin down what's happening.

That is odd. I tested with City Navigator NA in my area, and if I choose to not display Points>Shopping all the shopping carts disappear from the map.

Do you maybe have waypoints with the shopping cart symbol?

    Falagar,
I don't have any waypoints with shopping carts.
At High Res, they show up starting at 0.2 miles
    Higher - 0.7 miles
Highest - 2.0 miles (where hundreds of them are on the screen)
