Geotagging Photos in BaseCamp doesn't work?

There is probably something wrong with the date and time.

GPS tracks are recorded with UTC time.

I have started setting my camera date and time to UTC and the geocoding works great. No time corrections needed.

If that is the problem shouldn't I be able to add or subtract 5 hours in the BaseCamp geotag gizmo and have it work? I tried both plus 5 and minus 5 just in case I'm thinking it out incorrectly and it still says there are no photos that are good candidates.

I'm going out tomorrow and will set my camera ahead 5 hours to match UTC and will try again.

Does Basecamp even recognise raw files? Just thinking that any additional data added to a raw file is usually written to the sidecar file - wonder if Basecamp has this ability. Plus there are so many raw formats out there - Photoshop needs and update for just about every camera model / version that is released, not too sure whether Basecamp could keep up.

I just found this response in the "Mac BaseCamp" forum and assume that is the problem.

BaseCamp currently only supports geotagging of jpeg photos. It does sound like there is a problem if it was incorrectly specifying successful geotags of your DNG files.

I made a jpeg copy of one of my photos and saved it with the exif info. Now when I run the geotag in BaseCamp it sees just that one photo and successfully added the lat/long to the exif. So no joy with raw files! I'll look into the other solution you mentioned, thanks.

You may want to try Geosetter (freeware). It geotags my DNGs and RW2s, and the Exif reading module is updated often.

Thanks SELDOM for the lead on "Geosetter". I would prefer to geotag my images early on in the editing process (while still RAW) instead of just the jpg's later on. Perhaps Adobe will incorporate this feature into Bridge, Lightroom, etc. in the near future.

There is a plugin available from Jeffrey Friedl, at http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/gps, which supports geotagging from within Adobe Lightroom. It is not free, but the registration fee is very reasonable. This plugin works well, and allows tagging of RAW files from inside of Lightroom.
