How do you not show tracks on map in BaseCamp?

Is there a way to show the tracks on BaseCamp only for one you select? I can see as I add more tracks that my map is going to get messy if they are all displayed at the same time especially since they will almost always begin and end at my house.

    Use lists.

Create lists for different activities/times/whatever categorization you want to use and put the tracks belong to to that category in the appropriate list.

Then, when you select a list, only the tracks belonging to that particular list will be displayed.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, when I'm in the My Collection Folder so I can see all my waypoints it will still show all the tracks no matter what folder they are in. I created two folders, one with all the tracks and another with all the waypoints. When I want to look at a track I temporarilly send it to the waypoints forder and then send it back to tracks when I am finished with it.

It would be nice if the My Collection Folder would only display a track or route if you click on it in the Data View.

    Earl Horn,

Tracks, routes, waypoints are shown in both the list they are located in and My Collection.
By adding lists you organize these items. What you have done, however, is using a list for waypoints and another list for your tracks. I think you would be better of if you organize your items on a 'project' basis. What I mean is, create a list for project A and put all items (tracks, waypoints) that are related to that project in this list. Create other lists for similar projects.

The problem I have is with the tracks. I'm a birder and every trip I take to look for birds I save the tracks so I know where I've gone before; and I use the tracks to figure out where I took particular photos by matching the timestamps. So as soon as I have multiple tracks going around the same area it makes it difficult to make sense of the data on the map. What would be nice is to have the tracks in the data view, but have them only show up on the map if they are selected.

Since that doesn't work, I've essentially created a separate list that has everything in it except tracks and another for the tracks. Now I can send a given track to that list, do whatever I want and then remove it from that list when I am done with it.

  • Earl - are you manually searching your tracks for the correct timestamp / position to figure out where you too a particular photo?

I look at the timestamp on the picture, double click the appropriate track, highlight that same time in the track list, note the lat/long and then go back to the map for the exact location.

If you like, you can try to select the track, right-click, choose 'Geotag Photos using Track...' and navigate to your photos folder for that track. Then BaseCamp will automatically set the correct location for these photos matching the time-stamp of the photo to the position of the track at that time.
  • Alternately if you have a whole folder or selection of photos you wish to locate consider using a program like Geosetter - it will batch geotag the photos for you. I tried importing one of my previously geotaged images into Basecamp and it worked like a charm.

Thanks Falagar for pointing me to the functionality in Basecamp - didn't even know it existed ! Must give it a go sometime.

Thanks guys, that is a cool feature. I'll have to play around and see how I can make that work. When I'm doing a birding trip, I may have hundreds of photos and many duplicates of the same bird, butterfly or reptile. The first thing I do is batch rename them and I include their location in the name. Then I go through and try to reduce the number to just a few for each individual.

I'll google Geosetter and see if that is something that will help. If I put all the pictures I take/keep after processing into BaseCamp in a folder, they will probably still show up in the My Collection view and really make it unusable. Although I can see it being useful for select important ones that need full documentation sent to the appropriate records committee.

  • The advantage of Geosetter is that you can put all of your tracks into one folder, select just the images you want to geotag and then point the program to the folder containing your tracks - no need to select individual tracks. Even images taken over a period of months will be tagged as long as the corresponding track is in the folder.
