Basecamp can not be installed

On an old computer, which I use to make tests, basecamp can't be installed. The double click on the downloaded file results in an error message "the application can't be started, configuration (Anwendungskonfiguration) not correct".
Data of the computer: Windows XP Home SP 3, Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHz, 1,00 GB RAM. NVidia Geforce FX 5700 VE, net framework installed, Windows mediaplayer 11 installed. Antivirus Program activ (the same as on my other computers, where basecamp is installed).
My suspicion: 1,00 GB RAM (with 1000 Bytes per kB) is not the same as 1 GB RAM (with 1024 Bytes per kB)

    The message about 'configuration not correct' sounds suspiciously similar to the 'side by side configuration incorrect' error that some of us have been getting when trying to run the current 3.2.2 version of BaseCamp. Worth having a look at my earlier thread regarding that error. Might at least be worth looking at what Visual C++ distributables are currently installed on your computer. If it is old as you state, then it probably does not have the 2008 libraries.

    Have you tried installing BaseCamp 3.2.1 ( one version earlier than current)? That version appears to run without the 2008 libraries.

    It is an old computer, which I use only to make critical tests. But I builded him up from scratch and installed (besides an antivirus program and mozilla firefox) only the programs they asked for in the system requirements, amongst others the newest version of net framework. I find on the computer "MS visual C++ 2010 SP 1".
    Basecamp runs fine under Vista on my desktop Computer and under Windows 7 on my Laptop. so I have no need to continue the tests on the XP computer. But thanks for your reply, may be it helps others.

    Is it just C++2010 on the XP machine or are 2005 and 2008 also present? The configuration error appears to be common when running many applications, not just Garmin ones. The only reason I mention this is that some users found that they needed 2005 and 2008 to be present - having just the most recent wasn't enough.

    Have you checked what C++ are on the Vista and Windows 7 computers to see if they have C++ 2005 and 2008 rather that 2010.

    I get the impression that if you do need to install earlier versions, you would have to uninstall 2010 first, then build up the 2005, 2008, 2010 libraries in order. Just a thought - probably 'grasping at straws' as they say here.

    OK, Basecamp could now be installed. Let me tell the story:
    1 Compared the presence of C++ : The two "good" computers have c++ 2005,2008 and 2010, the XP machine only c++ 2010
    2. therefore first c++ 2005 installed, no difference,
    3. Also c++ 2008 installed: Now the installion was sucessfull, but the program could not be started. Message: could not find the right .net framework
    4 therefore net framework 4 deinstalled and installed once more. No difference
    5. now net framework 2.0 installed. Once more no success, but the message "net framework 3.5 required"
    6. Also net framework 3.5 installed. Now basecamp works.

    Why dont the people from Garmin write the following text into the system requirements for basecamp: "Basecamp requires Microsoft Visual C++ in the versions 2005, 2008 and 2010 as well as Microsoft .net framework 3.5. Normaly this programs are already on the computer, but if you have difficulties in the installation, check in the control system [systemsteuerung]/software [in XP] or controlsystem/Programs [vista and windows 7] if this programms are present."

    I theory the installer should take care of this and alert the user of missing components.

    Apparently this doesn't always work out as planned. We'll see if we can fix it.

    Thank you for reporting, and for posting what you did to fix it.

    SCCS Just in case it of any use to you, I have listed the programs installed on my Vista Home Premium computer for comparison.

    All BaseCamp versions up to and including version 3.2.1 worked when the following were installed:

    Garmin Communicator PlugIn
    Garmin USB Drivers
    MS.Net Framework 3.5SP1
    MS.Net Framework 4 Client Profile
    MS Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923-x86 8.0.50727.4053
    MS Visual C++ Redistributable
    Windows Driver Package - Garmin (grmnusb) Garmin Devices

    Installing BaseCamp 3.2.2 with just these programs resulted in a 'side by side' error.

    BaseCamp version 3.2.2 only worked after additionally installing the C++ 2008 redistributable and its update pack. The additional programs listed as being installed are:

    MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022
    MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 30729.17

    Worth me repeating that these additions only helped after restarting the computer and reinstalling a fresh copy of the BaseCamp 3.2.2 from the Garmin downloads site (having first uninstalled BaseCamp of course). What I cannot confirm is whether the restart and/or the reinstallation of BaseCamp made the difference.

    Subsequent to this having worked, an MS update has now also added:

    MS C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161

    If you are sure that this matches your situation, then I cannot offer any more advice based on my experience.

    To SCCS: I recommend, to clean also the registry after the deinstallation of Basecamp and befor installing it new. I use ccleaner to do this. It is my experience with other programs that the deinstallation of a program often does not clean the registry completely so a new installation starts with the same corrupt data of the registry.

    Bobberjack thanks for the detailed reply. I did compare list and found only a few differences with versions only.

    Such as: You have MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022
    MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 30729.17

    I have: MS Visual C++2008 Redistributable -x86 9.0.30729.4148 MS Visual C++2008 Redistributable -x86 9.0.30729.6161

    Also thanks to GERMAN_OPA I did clean up the registry with ccleaner.

    I reinstalled Basecamp and still have the same error.
    Any ideas?
  • May be that a program running in the background blocks a file needed for installation. Therefore: What happens, if you start the computer in the safe mode and install basecamp then?
