Multiple map/device help

Please excuse my inexperience with this topic but i have recently started using Basemap from Mapsource and Im curious if there is a way to organize which lifetime map updates are for which device? I have a Zumo 550, Nuvi 1450LMT, and a 62s that I have been having problems with. It seems that when I do a lifetime map update i have to load the update and then directly update the device. If I try to update my Zumo from the Nuvi update it doesn't work, but then I download the Zumo update which is the same map name and now it works.. Its a pain to download three upgrades when as far as I can tell they are the same name ie 2012.30.. Is there a way to find out which update is for which device then rename them to something like North America NT Zumo 2012.30? What have some of you done, and what are your recommendations?

If it really is the same map, I don't think you need to download it 3 times. You just will need to get the new unlock code and GMA file for your other devices. But maybe the maps aren't exactly the same.

There is a way to rename your installations. Unplug your devices, go to BaseCamp, Tools, Manage Map Products and check the 'Installed Locations' column. Do you have 3 different CN 2012.30 installations there? If you do, then the 3 maps are not the same. If there is only one entry for 2012.30, then the maps should be the same.

Go to the installed locations and find a info.xml or info_v2.xml file. Open these files in a text editor. You can change the name that will be displayed by BaseCamp if you change what is between the <Name> and </Name> tags.

As to which installation is for which device, that might be a bit trickier. You can try to check which GMA file unlocks which map and deduce it from there.

If anyone has recommendations and experience on how to handle this situation, please share.
  • If you click on TOOLS in the menu, then...

Click on "Manage Map Products", then...

Click on the "Unlock Regions" tab.

You should see the unit(s) listed in the Comments section beside each map product listed. Or the comment may give the (long) name of a .GMA file. I think the .GMA file is unique to the device the map product is unlocked to, so you could look for a .GMA file on each device to see which ones match.

You should be able to download the update for one device and make sure you install it to the PC (Install Options page, select either install to PC Only or to both PC and device). Once it's installed on the PC once, you can unlock it for multiple devices. The unlock codes for each update for each device should be on your MyGarmin account. Either look at each device in your registered devices list and the related maps should show up, or use the Manage Maps tab and look for the map updates for each registered device.

Each update remains [re]downloadable for one year from the time you first download it. Each update will be listed by name with the [re]download expiry date and the necessary information to use it, e.g. unlock code, product code, etc.

You should be able to persuade Basecamp to do the unlocking for you from within the Manage Map Products screen by clicking on the map product and clicking the "Unlock Online" button. Follow the directions that come up in your browser for retrieving existing unlock codes for each device.

One warning: to get the unlock codes to show up in MyGarmin for the latest update for each device, you might have to start the download for each device, let it run for a minute or so and then kill it. Remember to completely download and install at least one of them to the PC. Starting and killing the rest might be needed to trigger the server to create and make available the new unlock code for the updates for the other devices.

None of this is critical in how you do it. If you goof up the downloads, you can re-download as many times as necessary until you get it right (e.g. get it installed on the PC at least once). You have a year to get it figured out. :D

If you can't persuade Basecamp to retrieve the unlock codes for you using the "Unlock Online" button, that's also not a big deal. You can always use the "UNLOCK REGIONS" tab. In the Unlock Regions tab, click on the product name for the update you want to add an unlock code to, click the ADD button, go online to your MyGarmin account and copy the unlock code for that map product for another device and past it into the unlock code box in Basecamp. Repeat for as many devices as you need to unlock that product for.

I hope that makes some sense. Give it a whirl. You can't hurt anything if you mess it up a time or two. If you can't get it figured out, just give a shout in here with some details of what's happening and someone can help you get it sorted.
