Map bearing?

I want to mark a point on my map with Basecamp, and then use the mouse to locate another point, and create a line that displays distance and bearing. This line/point isn't a waypoint or a track (but could be).

I notice I can sort of do this now with the measure tool. But that line disappears, and no information is displayed on the line. I want to transfer the bearing information to GPS, save for later, and printable.

Often I arrive at a waypoint (checkpoint) and then dead reckon on a known map object for reference. This is very helpful when I know the GPS signal will be weak (canyon, tree cover).

I just want to make a line on the map, including bearing and distance information.

Thanks,
Jake
  • I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm going to assume that the windows version is the same as the Mac is this regard. Two options. Under "Preferences_Routing" choose the "straight line" option. This may do what you want. The bearing and distance will be available in the route properties window under "Instructions".

The second option would be to use the track tool to draw a track.

Killtimer, thanks for the reply. My Windows version doesn't have the capability of drawing a simple line...and I can't label it with a bearing.

This is unfortunate. I would have thought Garmin would have given features to Basecamp that relate to paper maps and orienteering....the very basics are missing.

Yes, it does have that capability.

Make two waypoints. Select them both and have the system create a route. Change the route type to DIRECT and recalculate it. It will be a straight line. Right click on it and have the system convert it to a TRACK. open the track properties and note the bearing and distance. Rename it using that info.
