Basecamp annoyances - labels and popups

Why all of the unnecessary labels in Basecamp? I zoom in on any state rec area and there are 6-10 identical labels hovering around it, all saying the same thing. I have tried reducing the number of labels, etc., with no luck.

Also, having a description pop up wherever I move the pointer is extremely annoying. This should be an option.

While I haven't seen cases of 6-10 copies of the same label on the same location, I have had this (labels obscuring what U want to see) happen and its annoying . I believe there is a thread where there is some discussion about future releases allowing some control over detail level. But, I wonder: how many maps do you have listed in the drop down? Maybe each map is displaying its label for the same location, and the more maps you have the more labels you'd see for the same point? Just a guess. Good Luck!

BaseCamp currently only renders one map product at a time. It does not matter how many map products are in the drop-down box.

We'll see if we can do anything about duplicate labels.

    Hi Falagar,

I don't know why you guys constantly insist on reinventing the wheel in Basecamp.

Just do it like Mapsource and there won't be a problem.

Well, the label rendering code is exactly the same in MapSource and BaseCamp. :)

The pop-ups are a different matter.

    Make labels work like MapSource

Make labels work like MapSource where they work very well. The BC balloons are too big and too sticky. Once one pops up and the mouse is moved, the balloon doesn't predictibly disappear or get replaced by one representing what's under the mouse.

That's interesting because the Basecamp balloons are much prettier than Mapsource's boxes. ;)

It's just that, as Dave726 mentioned, the balloons plus their shadows cover more space and you have to move the cursor farther from the object that triggered the display in order for the balloon to go away. The distance you have to move the cursor seems to be at least somewhat variable in Basecamp. I'm sure there's a logic to it but it just seems like in some situations you have to move the cursor quite a distance to force the balloon to disappear but in others it disappears almost as soon as you start to move the cursor.

My testing was with Topo Canada v4 in both Mapsource and Basecamp. That's an easy one to get a bunch of labels on a single point.

    The OP raised two issues:

    1. The number of labels displayed on the map (there should be no difference between MS and BC).

    and

    2. Annoying balloons.

I believe issue #1 exists in MapSource as well, issue #2 is BaseCamp specific.

We'll see what we can do about both issues.

    Agree.

I see the excessive labels in Topo 100K and Roads & Rec, though they are somewhat different in each, so it seems related to the particular software and not "built into" Basecamp or Mapsource.
