How do you create a Route using Trails and Roads?

I am using the latest version of BaseCamp (v3.2.2) and cannot get my Routes to follow any roads. I have set a number of waypoints on the map. When I try to create a Route, it will follow the waypoints perfectly along the hiking trails, but whenever I need the Route to follow a road, it backtracks all the way back around the hiking trails to connect to the next waypoint. Any Suggestions?

    Which map are you using?

BaseCamp can only follow roads that are within the routing network for that map. If the map doesn't provide the routing data, there is not much BaseCamp can do about.

It sounds like the map you are using has a routing network for the trails, but not for the roads.

I am using the Topo U.S. 24K Northeast (2008) map.

Does this behavior occur with any activity profile (motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian)? I've noticed really strange behavior trying to route long distances as a pedestrian, and trying to route over trails if setting is for car/motorcycle.

I have not tried other profiles, but what is strange is I can create a Route between two waypoints on a trail or between two waypoints on the road, but not if I want to go from the trail to the road. I even checked satellite images to be sure it was not a bridge. It is very frustrating.

What profile are you using? As I said above profiles can make a BIG difference. Try a few others. Also, how many routes exhibit this behavior? Garmin makes quality maps, but it's possible that the trail and road don't share a node to connect them. On one of your problem routes try routing just from the road to the trail (2 points only) and see if they connect. Set the profile to pedestrian for this test.

I don't own any Garmin 24k maps, but it may be that trails and roads don't share nodes. Try routing from paved road to unpaved, and see if that works.

I tried this again and still no luck. I tried the Hiking, Walking, Mountaineering, and Bicycle profiels with no luck. I started on a fresh area of the map and clicked on an unpaved road and tried to create a route to a point on a trail about 20 feet away. Every time, it takes me around a 25 mile loop to connect the two points. On the map (Topo US 24K National Parks West) I can see a very small gap between the road and the trail. Any other suggestions?
  • Think you've answered your own question, it's that 'very small gap' that is giving the problem ;)

See your other post where I've suggested a solution :)
