Auto number of via-points creating route

I have an etrex legend HCx and when I try and create a route from a track and use the auto detect number of via points it still gives me more than 50 which is too many for my etrex legend.

I can limit to 50 but should it auto detect my device (which is connected) or am I using my HCx incorrectly in some way??

Sometimes the only solution is brute force. You'll likely have to just go through the created route in Basecamp and start removing via points until it will fit on the eTrex. This will allow you to use your judgment about which ones you can remove and still retain a decent approximation of the original track.

Right now Basecamp is really saying that if it removes any more the resulting route may be too much unlike the original track to be useful to you.

It's not magic, so at some point you have to apply your own judgment in the process.
