Nope, you are right.

Their design philosophy now is that "Lists" within your "My Collection" will do what you want.... and it might.

Others have suggested adding categories. I have suggested 'tags' which is similar, but has some additional subtleties. I believe that they have acknowledged at lease one of them for a future release, but I'll leave it to Garmin to confirm/deny that.

Lists won't help when you export the waypoints and POIs to the GPS and want to look one up via category.

I've also found a lot other fields missing from the waypoints properties that were in MS. This includes street, city, zipcode, state, phone number.... This is all information that is stored in the GPX.

Interesting! my eTrex doesnt seem to support those fields. It DOES have a "notes" section which maps to "Comments" in basecamp, and Elevation which also has a field in BC. BC has a temperature field, which oddly enough usually fluctuates, and is currently blank, but has no corresponding field in the eTrex. The eTrex doesnt use categories, but approximates it with the waypoint ICON/Symbols. But alas, that's not terribly useable (see https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=22575 which is also pertinent to BC).

I offer this info only as a point of perspective. I would imagine that users of devices with those fields are not able to fully utilize those devices features if the PC software doesn't support them. :(

I'm using a Zumo 660 and it fully supports categories. It's nice to put POIs and waypoints into categories, like Hotels, BBQ, Resorts etc and then be able to filter by category on the GPS showing what's close by...

The GPS doesn't support the fields I was talking about but on the PC it's nice to have that information when planning routes.

My Nuvi 765T fully supports categories. In fact it supports mutiple categories per waypoint, as does Mapsource.

This insistence on ignoring the basics of Mapsource in Basecamp is hugely frustrating. Can't maintain address or category data or bulk edit things like categories, proximity and symbols. Can't experiment with complex routes without jumping through a dozen hoops. But somehow we are supposed to consider Basecamp as a replacement for Mapsource. I'm afraid it has a ways to go. :(

I agree there are things missing from BC, but Garmin seems to really trying to listen to users and make it a better program. I can't wait to see the next release and see just what suggestion have been included.

That's simply not true. Not even close. Not yet.

The frustrating thing is that it's basics that are missing, not some sort of fancy stuff. What makes it doubly annoying is we are told that many of those basics were left out intentionally.

How do you claim that one program is a replacement for another when you don't even include many of the basics of the program being replaced?

The lack of any constructive response to the previous thread with which we were concerned (post code search) suggests that there is an unwillingness to grapple with those basics.

No one has yet explained why the development of Mapsource cannot continue.

street, city, phone...etc. will be available in a future release of BC ;)

as for category, we are still figuring out all the details.

We don't mean to ignore your request. Unfortunately I can't share the roadmap of BaseCamp with you. But I will say that refining the find system is one of our top priority in one of our future release. Sorry for the not so helpful response.
