Wishlist - County Borders and Names

I've moved from MS to BC. Mostly without difficulty. And it gets better all the time with the tips on the Zumo Forum.

I am currently using a Zumo 550, which I'm very happy with.

One of the things which has been missing from both MS and now BC, that I use for almost all of my route planning, are County Borders, and County Names.

I, and many other people, do the Harley Owners Group, ABC's of Touring contest each year. The idea is that you get photos showing your Harley, a specific category of sign, and a copy of a HOG magazine, to prove the correct year.

One of the categories for points in the ABC's is Counties.

I've attached one of this year's ABC's County photos (Queen Anne's County, MD) showing what I mean.

Since neither MS or BC show counties, I find myself always creating duplicate routes in Street Atlas, by DeLorme. (I believe Microsoft Streets and Trips also does this) And even SA does not include the County Names, they just show the borders.

But apparently there is also a HAM Radio contest whereby HAM operators keep track of the Counties of other HAM operators they have contacted. And one very nice gentleman took the time to create a file of every County name in the US, that can be used with Street Atlas, so that the County Names appear on your SA map.

In any case, I would very much like to be able to see County borders and County Names on my BC maps. And as a plus, be able to control the size and color of the names, which you can do with SA.

Thanks for your consideration,
Don Sepanski

Check out http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/10/ as it might do what you want. I don't know about Zumo, but on my eTrex I can select overlays and I have this map. Have not figured out if BC will show overlays, or just one map at a time. Good luck!

Thanks PLARKINJR. Using the link to US States & Counties Boundaries I was able to install that download and county boundaries now appear on my Zumo 660 at the 5 mile and closer display. County names, however, are not displayed.

Glad that works for you! Check out that site's other maps. I use the Texas Topo.

If you are REALLY into maps and stuff (and fiddling with files), also check out http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Thanks! I hope it makes it in a future update of BaseCamp.

    Thanks for this info.

I did try it with MS. If I'm using it properly, it's not an overlay on the MS maps, but merely an alternate map.

I'm not likely to use it on my Zumo 550 though. I guess there might be certain occurrences when it could come in handy, but mostly I plan for my county border stops on the computer, when I'm home planning my route.

By the time I'm riding the route, I already have the county stops planned as waypoints, so the addition of a line in the Zumo wouldn't help much.

But thanks for the suggestion :-)

    Hi Don,

Just in case you weren't aware, unlike your navigation device Mapsource doesn't do overlays. You can only select one map at a time. So even if a map is intended to be an overlay, Mapsource will just display it all alone.

I don't think Basecamp will do overlays. At least I have not found a way to make it do them. It seems to be just like Mapsource in this respect.

    Thanks Ken!

I was never a MS expert. And I didn't know that about MS not doing overlays.

I will never be a BC expert either.

I just get to a certain level of competance, enough to do my routes, and then that's usually as far as I get.

And even if my Zumo would do overlays, it wouldn't help me much with my county issue.

Looks like at least for the time being I'll be doing duplicate routes with Street Atlas, like I've been doing for years.

for what it is worth, I often do routes in Google Earth and convert them to something Basecamp can use.

Just for clarification the boundaries do show up on my Zumo 660 (without county name, though), but you are correct in that it does not overlay on MS.
