Routes and the Waypoints Contained Within (continued)

What began as a “new” issue with BaseCamp, turned out to be related to an issue I first presented here on 8/23/11 “Routes and the Waypoints Contained Within”. That thread also contains a gpx file which exhibits the behavior described.

In My Collection, I wanted to remove 8 waypoints from a list. This list contains a total of 21 waypoints and 2 routes. The 8 waypoints were sent to another list without problem. I was UNABLE to remove these 8 waypoints from the original list although I was able to remove them from the new list! I closed BC, reopened it tried again – they still could not be removed. Of the 21 waypoints in this list, these 8 do not even have delete as an available option, the others do.

Doing some more testing (experimenting?), I sent all of these waypoints and routes to a new “test” folder. I was now able to remove everything, including the 8 waypoints from the original list. Now, I sent the desired waypoints and both routes back to the original list. I specifically did NOT select the eight problem waypoints. Back in the original list, the eight waypoints were there!!! At some point I discovered the 8 waypoints were connected to one of the two routes. If that route was present, removal of the waypoints would not occur. If I sent the route to a list, the 8 waypoints followed.

I sent the route to my GPSMAP 62s , disconnected the GPS and turned it on. I first examined the waypoints. Those eight waypoints were now in the GPS even though I did not select and send them…they came as part of the route. Additionally, there were now multiple entries for other waypoints that were previously not there.

In my posting “Routes and the Waypoints Contained Within” I noted that if I sent a route created by BaseCamp to my GPSMAP 62s, it included the waypoints used to create the route even though I did not want the waypoints in the GPS…just the route. Also, if I examined the route (edit), the routes waypoints were listed in many cases by the description or comment field, NOT the name field. Now I noticed that 5 other routes that were known to be without problems, were displaying route waypoints by comment instead of name and now had some waypoints names with the pesky “1” which wasn’t there before.

Looking at the GPX folder, I discovered that the 5 previously good routes now had the same date/time stamp as the route just sent to the device. Opening these route (gpx) files in Notepad, I could see that alterations had occurred including they now contained some waypoints in addition to the route info.

My original posting indicated that BaseCamp included waypoints with the route and now I’ve discovered that sending a route to the GPS caused existing routes to be altered. If I send the waypoints to the GPS and create the route within the GPS, it turns out fine.

Because of this behavior with the routes created in BaseCamp, I continue to use Windows Explorer to manage the gpx and other files and Notepad to edit the gpx files: remove the “1”s that appear, remove the <descr> lines so the <name> will be used and remove all the waypoints that were included in the route gpx file.
