Several Observations and Possible Feature Requests

Here are some observations I've made while using BC the past couple of months.

Route Properties/Edit Route
I would find the ability to edit a waypoint name and symbol within a route useful. As the waypoint is now within a route, it shouldn’t affect the original waypoint existing outside of the route (or vice versa). I currently edit the name in a route (remove the number added by BC) using Windows notepad.

The ability to make a point within a route “invisible”…its only there to force a route in a particular direction.

When adding or deleting a point in a route (via copy/paste, delete, etc.) in route properties, the list jumps to the top position after the action is performed requiring scrolling back down to the spot I am working on. I would like to see the list stay in the same place when performing these actions.

My Collection
It would be nice to see, when an item is selected, in what list(s) that item currently resides. The “Data View” would be good for starters. Sometimes, I’ve had an item in My Collection but since it does not appear in any lists, I might not be aware of existence because I work in individual lists.
Refresh (aka F-5) would be nice. I’ve had items I can’t delete only to discover they no longer exist. A refresh command (or maybe automatic) will prevent the need to shut down and re-open Basecamp.

Tool Buttons
New Waypoint: an option for it to automatically cancel after a point has been created; perhaps going back to the Select tool. Many times I’ve inadvertently created a point when I intended to select a point or perform some other action.
Pan, Zoom, Select, and Measure: When you click on the Pan, Zoom, or Measure buttons, they toggle back and forth to Select. If Pan is selected and you click on Pan again, it switches to Select; if you click it again it goes back to Pan. Zoom and Measure exhibit similar behavior. I would like to see an option to disable this action.

Thanks, John

All are good, but this one in particular I really like... And being able to select a list of all items not in a List so that you could quickly put them into Lists. (boy, that sounds confusing: put items on a list of unlisted things into lists)

Do you mean like a checkbox in front of each, and it displays on the map only elements within those you have checked? If so, I totally agree!

Or do you mean some way to "hide" individual lists from appearing under My Collection (with some buried menu option to "unhide")?
  • As you first stated - my maps are now so cluttered, at the moment all we have is a "one or all" display option.

Yeah, I rather like how Google Earth has a tree structure, where you can check/uncheck an entire branch, or individual leaf-nodes, to toggle their appearance in the map-view pane.
  • PLARKINJR: Maybe unlisted items could be automatically flagged or highlighted or, automatically in their own list of unlisted items as you mentioned!

Regarding the Google Earth "tree"...I believe I saw a request somewhere on this board requesting the ability to create "sub-folders" to a list. I don't have many lists yet but I can already see a benefit in that.

Anyone know why some items will not rename? I right-click, select rename, and actually rename it. Hit enter and its still the same!

Are you accidentally trying to rename an item on the device's list? vs the one in your basecamp database? I've been tripped up by that before.

I think providing an option to change the via point symbol is more ideal

Agreed. I'll add it to our todo list.

It would be nice to see, when an item is selected, in what list(s) that item currently resides.

That's already on our wish list

My Collection / list should refresh automatically. If you see it again, please let us know the details.

Yeah, it is already on our list
  • PLARKINJR: Yes, I was in My Collection, not the GPS. I tested it again with GPS disconnected...one route would not rename. I tried two ways...right-click, rename on the line itself and opening properties and renaming it there. Via properties, I could see the change take effect. Closing properties, the change was there. I went from the list to My Collection and the original version was back; went back to the list and the original was there as well!

Tried deleting the part of the name I wanted to rename, it worked. Renamed again and put the correct word back in and it seems fine. Two renames required to accomplish what should have taken one step!

KFPANDA: Thanks for you responses! Any thoughts on the behaviour I described with the tool buttons?

I'm not sure about this one as it make the waypoint tool inconsistent with the other tools. Also, in case of I misplaced my waypoint, I can just undo (ctrl+z) and then try again without re-selecting the tool. But regardless, I have noted down your request for consideration. ;)

P.S. you can ensure the select tool is selected by pressing the 's' key.

I agreed. In fact, that's what we originally had. The toggle behavior was added because some users had trouble deselecting the tool during usability testing...
