I replaced my Garmin Legend Cx and Mapsource US Topo with a new Oregon 450T and Basecamp.
Now when I open Basecamp it still asks me to insert the Top West CD before I can do anything??? Is there a way to get around this, I Don't want to have tyo lug around a bunch of CDs when I go camping or hunting and want to download or upload tracks and waypoints. Stupid!

    Try this!

Try this! In the drive that the "Garmin" folder resides in, mine is in "C" drive, make a new sub-folder. I simply named mine "US TOPO". With the US Topo disk in the DVD drive, highlight all contents, I use select all in the edit tool bar; copy the entire contents of the disk to the new sub-folder you made in "C/Garmin/US TOPO". Now open Basecamp and it should show up in the map tool bar at the top of page.

I copied it to the Garmin directory and it does show up but its still looking for the disc in the D drive and will not let me do anything until its inserted and I click on OK.

If you copied 100% of the US Topo disk to the new subfolder you named "US TOPO" in the "Garmin" folder, you will see "Setup.exe". Double click this file and install. If this doesn't do the trick someone else might have a better way. This is what worked for me!

There are two versions of Topo USA. The first consisted of 4 CD's, in a double CD case, and installed as 3 (from memory) distinct map products: East, West and Alaska/Hawaii. Topo USA 2008 comes on a single DVD and is a single map product.

From the sounds of it you have the older CD based topo's. I'm not sure these will even work with Basecamp (I use Topo USA 2008 now) as that software didn't even exist when the maps were created.

I could try the older US topo's in BaseCamp, if that's what you have, but can't do so until tomorrow (probably). Topo USA 2008 works with BaseCamp just fine (I do it).

I do have the older 3 CD set and it does work with Basecamp as long as you insert the West CD when it asks for it.
The version was 3.02 but has been upgraded to 6.xx.xx something via download.

I am not real happy with the software so last year I bought Delorme Topo USA which I like better but my old Legend Cx did not work with it. Now with the Oregon 450t I can use the Delorme software so I may just skip the Garmin stuff alltogether if it is going to be a PITA.

I was planning to sell the Legend Cx along with the software and Ram mount as package to help cover the cost of the new Oregon so don't want to be tied to the West CD disc.

I have the old 3 CD set and it works in Basecamp as I've described. I would ask you to insert disk every time I used it until I did as described in my former posts.

Did you install all three discs?
Once you installed the disc and you see it in the Garmin folder, do you install it over again but from the saved copy so it overwrites the old file?

I have 2 computers. One is XP 32 bit and one is Windows 7 64 bit. On both computers I named the subfolder "US TOPO WEST" and I copied the entire disk (US Topo West) from the DVD drive to the new subfolder. After coping the whole disk to the hard drive ("C/Garmin/US_TOPO_WEST") I double clicked "Setup.exe" in the new "US TOPO WEST" subfolder and installed it. If you expand the "US TOPO WEST" folder you will see the subfolder named "West"; which contains 2,622 .img files. If you want to use all 3 disks (I don't use them) then make 2 new subfolders under "US TOPO" called "Central" & "East" and then copy the .img files from each of the remaining disks to there prospective folders.
I don't know what OS you are running, but the "US TOPO" map does not show up in either of my control panels under the "programs" folder. If it does in yours, you might try deleting it and then start over and follow the above instructions.
From what I can tell, this old program will want to launch from wherever it was installed from. Therefore, installing it from your hard drive instead of your CD player results in it not asking you to load the CD into the CD drive.

In thinking way back, I believe I had the same troubles as you are having now. I think I backed up Basecamp and then uninstalled it and I also uninstalled Mapsource After I re-installed Basecamp and Mapsource I did not install the old US Topo map from the CD drive. When you insert the CD into the drive, cancel the install and then follow my instructions.
This is of course a last ditched approach, but because you can't uninstall the US Topo on its own you have to do it by starting over and not loading it from your CD drive.
I happened on to this fix because I re-installed my OS and I had to start all over by reloading all my programs.

I just got a new computer with Windows 7 64 bit so not only am I struggling with BaseCamp which I didn't have before but the 64 bit operating system too which has been a nightmare with a couple of my old programs.
