Issue with waypoints of "Route from Track"

Spanish user of Basecamp v3.2.1. Windows 7. Etrex Legend HCx.

When I create a Route from track, in the properties window I can see the waypoints created automatically according the number I have chosen for that. But those waypoints are not visible on my collection.

When I send the route to my etrex legend, it looks ok, but the waypoints are showed as small black circles and not as blue flags. The result is that for my legend there are no waypoints, it's impossible to find them using the search feature and it's impossible to navigate the route with estimated distance and time to end data, so I find no sense at all to use a route if it doesn't follow the order of waypoints.

¿Is this a normal behaviour of basecamp? I the answer is yes, I suggest to improve this for next versions, and i would like to know if there is a way to convert all those via points (or whatever they are named) to waypoints.

This is the intended behavior.

I believe if the route contained waypoints, then a lot of devices would announce them, which is not what most people would like.

We would like to introduce an option in the future allowing the user to specify/change what kind of point each point in a route is.

I don't have a good work-around for what you want to achieve. Other than after creating the route, make waypoints for all the route via-points and create a new route from those waypoints. I am of course aware that is not very comfortable.

Issue with "Route from Track" explanation

I know that a lot of waypoints in a route could be annoying, and I understand perfectly what you wrote. But maybe there is some other way to achieve what I try to explain in detail below:

For hikers, it is very important to know the remaining distance and time to end of the route accurately, specially in winter days where the sun light goes out fast. What I know, is that to know these data correctly, the only way possible is that the route follow as much as possible waypoints that fit almost exactly the track we are running.

The fact is that when I transfer a circular route of 20 Km. (created from track) on my gps device and start navigating, with my first steps the trail processor shows as distance to end the calculated from my actual position (10 m, 20 m. to end, etc...) and not what should be, following all the track (19,90 Km, 19'80 Km., etc...). The same with the estimated time to end. If I start walking a trail of 20 Km., in the first minute walking, the trail processor shows there's one minute remaining to end the route.

Maybe it's possible to achieve using only via points for the intermediate points and two waypoints at the start and end of the route, in that case the solution could be that the Route from Track ability set by default the start and end points as waypoints.
Other softwares as Compe GPS made this by default. The route for track ability create all via points as waypoints, and when the route is transferred to device, all the waypoint are transferred automatically too, so I think it could be a improvement as an option to the user. But I'm a newbie so if I'm doing something wrong please report it.

I will test creating wp manually for start and end points and see the behaviour on gps.

Could you use Tracks vs Routes? I know nothing about the Etrex, so perhaps it is the limitation.

I use an Oregon 450 for cycling. I follow the Track with Waypoints sent to it via BaseCamp. The O450's Map and the Dashboard have different Data Fields which will display Distance to Destination, Distance to Next (next being the next waypoint), Time to Destination, Time to Next, the time for Sunset. The O450 will record a Track of your travels also, so if you deviate from you planned path, you have a record of where you need to go to get back on your planned Track. Hopefully your Etrex does also.

You must be sure the start and end waypoints are not in identical locations.

For example, in your example of the circular route the measurement from any point on the route to the end of the route and to the start of the route will always do as you describe because they are the same point and the device will always show you the shortest distance remaining (in your example it is from where you are after travelling 10m, 20m, etc. to the end point ... which is also the start point!).

You must be sure the Legend has recalculated the route to use the internal routepoints that Basecamp created so that there will be no "as the crow flies" measurement in the route.

You may wish to add manual "real" waypoints to important/useful points along the route for easy reference along the way. Your Legend HCx will make a beep (which you can change or turn off) to notify you as you approach each of these and will flash up a window (which you can also disable) with the distance and the change of direction.

Thank you Ken for your explanation.

Last week I have been trying doing so, adding some "manual" waypoints to the route, including the start and end points. Everything seems to work fine.

Anyway, I think there's some improvement around this issue in basecamp, as having at least to start and end waypoints by default. But for sure next releases will show more options to the user concerning waypoints management.
