BaseCamp 3.2.2 has been released, it is available for download at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435.

Currently there is a problem with the Auto-Update, so please use the download link for now.

3.2.2 is a Maintenance Release, that means it is mostly bug-fixes, not new features.

This is a list of changes:

  • Fixed an issue with migrating waypoints with thumbnails from previous versions of BaseCamp to 3.2.1. This issue could have corrupted the database.
  • Fixed an issue with tracks that had been duplicated becoming corrupted.
  • Added a prompt to notify the user when data loss might have occurred.
  • Added a 'restore from previous version' menu item.
  • Added support for exporting of fitness data (heart rate and cadence) in tracks.
  • Changed to attempt to fix the paths in Garmin Custom Maps (KML ground overlay) files at start-up without notifying the user that there were problems with the file.
  • Changed the message displayed at start-up when the current video mode/card doesn't support 3D.
  • Improved initial download size estimates for some BirdsEye products.
  • Fixed some issues with undo/redo.
  • Fixed several issues related to application shutdown.
  • Fixed an issue with not recognizing Garmin mode USB device (such as the GPSMap 60) arrival and removal.
  • Fixed several issues related to aborting transfers to Garmin mode USB devices.
  • Fixed some issues related to ejecting mass storage devices.
  • Fixed some issues with changing folder selection while using the BirdsEye wizard.
  • Fixed an issue with reading geotagged photos from many smartphones.

    I am somewhat confused.

    Every other piece of software I have will announce that an update is available but prompts whether to download it or not.

    In short the update check is useful (in case I miss an announcement in these forums) but I don't want it to download automatically.

    EDIT: Ooops, STUARTMW said it short and sweet. And in way less time than it took me to type this. Here's the unexpurgated version. :D

    If you are running a release version of BaseCamp (a non-Beta), then you should just be able to say "Later" and not download it. You can also disable the check for update in options, then you would never get prompted to download.

    I'm running 3.1.3 release version. I do not get prompted. As soon as I launched Basecamp it popped a window in the upper right corner of the Basecamp window telling me that it's downloading 3.2.2. It didn't ask for permission. There was no "Later" button that I could see.

    I am somewhat confused. You can disable the update (by saying to never check for updates). Even if an update is found, you don't have to download it (just click later).

    I tried a quick hunt through the menus to try to find where to disable updates but since the download was already in progress I did not want to give it enough time to complete and start installing so I was unable to find where to do it before I felt compelled to exit the program.

    I'll kill the network connection and take a closer look to try and find that option.

    The only thing we do that might fit your description is that we download the update in the background, so you can keep working. Would you like some progress feedback here and a way to cancel it (other than shutting down the app)?

    No, and No. Well, a cancel button would be better than the way it is now. But...

    I like an automatic notifier when the program starts up that there is an update available but I want to be able to ignore it and NOT have it automatically start downloading until I tell it to. In this case it not only informed me of the 3.2.2 update but immediately started the download without asking my permission. I really dislike that sort of default behaviour.

    And it's clearly default behaviour because I've never spent any time monkeying with Basecamp's preferences (the reason I have no idea, yet, where they are buried in the menus).

    Okay, I found Tools > Options > Software Updates and unchecked it. Unfortunately now it will never check.

    I want it to check.

    Another problem is with the wording of the option itself. It just says "Check for updates". It doesn't give any indication that if you check that box it's not only going to automatically check but also automatically download and install. As an absolute minimum you need to fix that and make it clear what's really going to happen when that option is checked.

    I want it to work like Windows/Microsoft Updates. Give us three options please:

    1. Automatically check, download and install updates
    2. Automatically check and notify but ask permission to download and install
    3. Disable

    Another way I want it to work like Microsoft/Windows Updates, I don't want someone else to decide a default for me. I want it to ask me how I want updates handled at installation time or when the program is run the first time. This last is probably a bit too much to ask for, but I would sure appreciate having the three options above, regardless what you decide the default behaviour should be.

    And if you decide the default behaviour should continue to be "check, download and install automatically" then, Yes, I do want a Cancel button please. That way at least I can kill it and go change the option without having to exit the program and kill the network connection first.

    As always, thanks so much for listening. :)

    1. Hovering display of data should also be displayed when using the Zoom Tool, New Waypoint Tool, Insert Tool and Move Tool. The Zoom Tool should have the single point of focus, similar to the MapSource "+", in the upper left corner of the magnifier icon for accurate placement.
    2. The hovering display when using the Select Tool gets slow to respond and sometimes won't clear a caption box to display one currently under the cursor.
    3. The Hovering display shows only the City name rather than individual POIs at unpredictible times. The only way to get POI hovering captions is to change the zoom level.
    3. Waypoint Properties should display and allow editing of the Garmin extended XML address fields: StreetAddress, City, State, PostalCode, Country, PhoneNumber.
    4. Route numbers are hidden behind routes.

    Thanks for your input. I created cases for the first 3 issues.

    Issue number four (extended GPX info) we will get around to eventually, that is on our to-do-list.

    Hidden road signs is something we'd like to address as well.

    Guy''s, where are the keyboard shortcuts?

    Something like:

    z = zoom tool
    s = select tool
    h = hand tool

    And maybe:
    i = insert point tool
    d = delete point tool
    m = move point tool
    c = cut/sptil route/track

    And
    Ctrl-W = create waypoint
    Ctrl-R = create route
    Ctrl--Shift-T = create track

    For that i miss all functions of the MapSource Extra menu as where the current BaseCamp Extra menu items are under another menu.

    And i have no idea of the amounnt of routepoints, time or distance in the normal view. I have to switch to the data/filter view and push routes to see them, much to far hidden.
    Better is that the label on the map which now only shows the route name when click once on a route shows not only the name, but also the distance and time.
    In the list of routeponts and directionals it is very handy to have a line counter in front of every entry (dubbel click route for route properties)

    Ahhh, i ask for new features :)

    The first 3 short-cuts we already have (you probably already know this).

    The 4 you mention next is something we definitely plan to add soon.

    I am not sure about the last ones, we already have T, W and R that switch to the appropriate tool (somehow this only seems to work in Full screen mode, I'll have to look into this).

    Stuart and Ken, I have to apologize. I wasn't familiar with the behavior when auto-update triggers.

    We do indeed download the update automatically. We don't do it if you click the "Check for Software Updates" entry in the help menu. (That's when we have the 'download' or 'later' options.)

    I am not confused anymore. :)

    I understand what the annoying behavior is. Let's see if we there is something we can do about it.

    On the PC i was yesterdag working on (a WIndows XP in English and workign in Dutch (Nederlands) language in BaseCamp. The first 3 where also not working. I did not try fullscreen.

    Now I am updating my home PC's and notice a tip before going into full screen which tells me what the shortcuts are. Yesterday i have search in all menu's and the BaseCamp help: What are the shortcuts and i did not find it. The Extra menu which exists in BC for Mac and MapSource is used for another purpose in BC for Win (they use it to mention the tools and shortcuts) and in the BC help is nothing about the keyboard shortcuts.

    I now notice that i can't use Search (in the search tab) in the Help file, no search results available.

    The shortcuts do work however on my Home systems in Full screen and normal. But program focus must be on the Map and not on the data.

    Yes, focus must be on the map. I just tried on my home machine (Win 7 English) and BC running in Dutch. The Z, S and H short-cuts work for me as long as the map is selected.

    I will look into making these short-cuts more prominent and check what's going on with the help.

    On a different note, whenever you notice something weird with the Dutch translation and you have a few minutes, please let me know (via PM).

    Data Filters greyed out

    I just downloaded and installed BC 3.2.2 ("Check for updates" would not work from the Help menu .. complains about not being able to connect with the server.). Installation appears to be uneventful.

    I tried to use View > Data Filter but all filters except "All Data" are greyed out. Is this broken? :confused:

    Data confusion

    BC 3.2.2

    I thought I was gaining some understanding of how the data model in BC works and, therefore some ability to predict what might happen if I do certain things.

    Wrong!

    I exported my entire collection to a GDB file. Then I immediately imported the GDB file so there were no changes in Basecamp's collection in the meantime.

    1. As I expected, the imported file showed up as a new list (list name == "My Collection copy" was assigned automatically from the GDB filename).

    2. As I expected, the new list was identical to the original collection.

    3. Unexpected: there were no duplicates listed in My Collection. There was only one of everything showing ("All Data" filter selected. All the other filters are still greyed out and inaccessable.)

    QUESTION: Where did the additional copy of everything go when I imported the GDB file? E.g. why isn't there a complete set of duplicate names in My Collection? Did the objects in the imported GDB file not get imported ... just the names?

    EDIT: Just for the record, My Collection is not anything significant. I just imported a couple of GDB files from Mapsource that contain a bunch of waypoints and tracks and a couple of routes, just so I would have something to mess with.

    The Garmin update server is down, I hope this will be fixed soon.

    The filters currently only work in the data view (Ctrl-Tab). We should not be showing the filter options while in map view, that will have to be fixed. Or maybe we will make filters work in the map view as well.
