Issues Exporting from Google Earth to Nuvi 1450

Hi All,

First of all, I'd like to say the Basecamp software is very well designed and laid out. It is much more refined than I had expected it to be.

My issue is this: I created several paths in Google Earth (following 4x4 trails) and would like to be able to read them on my Nuvi 1450T. I performed the following steps:

1. Export path as a KML
2. Convert KML to GPX (Using GPSVisualizer)
3. Load gpx file into Nuvi using Basecamp
4. Disconnect, open tools>my data>import route

The problem is with step 4. I get an error message saying no data available. I have tried:

1. Placing the gpx files directly in the /gpx directory
2. Using MapSource
3. Using GPSBabel to convert. Was unsuccessful in conversion, likely due to incorrect settings.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • You have probably got it loaded as a "track" in Basecamp. "Tracks" and "routes" are two very different things. You need to use Basecamp to convert the track to a route and then load the route to your Nuvi.

Ran into the issue when using too many points. Some of the routes were not able to upload (the good ones, of course).

Searching online I found that the number of points is partially dependent on the route's total length, but that the number is around 200 (I have the Nuvi 1450).

Has there been any workaround for this? I realize 200 points is a lot for highway use, but when taking mountain trails, it can be nice to have plenty of points to know you are on the right path, especially when there are other trails that branch off often. The trips I am taking are around 30-50 miles but I will be taking longer trips in the future. I was able to reduce the existing route points to a number that will upload, but the quality of the route is greatly reduced, and it's more of a general direction indication now than a path. I'll try it out tomorrow and see how it works out. If you don't hear back from me, it's probably because I got lost and froze to death because my Nuvi wouldn't upload the entire route.... :D

I've been looking at getting a Lowrance Baja 5m for off road use, and keeping the Garmin for highway/street use... but $600 is a lot of money.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks!
  • Make more, but shorter, routes instead of trying to cover an entire run in one route.

Or get something that will display tracks, like my eTrex Legend HCx. Then you can convert the route to a track, display it on the screen and visually follow the track. You can even get guidance instructions on the screen by using the TrakBack feature. I use it on my motorcycle and mountain bike that way.

Cool! I'll just make several files then... and reduce the number of points wherever possible.

    Thanks for all the help!
