BirdsEye Satelite Imagery fault

I have recently taken out a subscription with birdseye satellite imagery. Last week I downloaded (at highest resolution) a small area of glasgow city centre,uk, and placed this on the memory card in my garmin 550t. Basecamp confirmed the expected high res image (comparable to the same google maps image).
However, the last couple of days I have been trying to download larger coverage areas of glasgow city (up to 200MB) and noticed that at each attempt (at highest detail level) the size of the .jnx file transferred over to the garmin's memory card was suspiciously low (around 4000KB in size). One of these attempts even overlapped with my download last week. In basecamp it was very clear that these recent downloads were, as expected, very low detail, however the overlapping last weeks download was visibly much higher in resolution....something not right here!
I even video'd an attempt (using bandicam software) confirming a download size of 198MB, at highest detail setting, covering 165 sq km.....this took 23 seconds  and produced a .jnx file transferred to the garmin memory card of 4206KB in size......clearly incorrect for the settings I chose!
I notice that others have also noted this problem e.g. jacobbax at https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=19388

Is this a real fault (definately appears to be) or does anyone have any other ideas?

This problem happens with both the current and beta releases of basecamp

    any update folks?
  • I see the same thing here. If I can't download the highest resolution images, then Garmin isn't supplying what they charged me for.

    This is not right.

I'm downloading images in the US, so I can't say for sure that the service for Europe works the same way. But what I've found, as have others, is that there is a limit of about 5,000 map tiles that can be downloaded in one request. Unfortunately, Basecamp doesn't tell you how many tiles you have selected until after the download starts, and doesn't warn you when you exceed the request limit- instead, if you select too many tiles at the highest setting, it automatically and without warning downloads at a lower resolution. So you have to play a guessing game if you want to maximize your request size. For a certain general area, you have to try a few requests to get a feel for the relationship between the number of titles and the estimated download size, which Basecamp does report before you finalize the request. Very frustrating.

When I first ran into this, I didn't understand what was happening and thought I had been ripped off when I saw the lower-res imagery that was downloaded without warning. I hope the developers will look at improving the notifications, so users can knowingly select download areas based on the limits.

Do you know how much MB, 5000 tiles is?

I tryed a download, 42 km2, 48 MB 3226 tiles, this can be highest detail.
When I download the same area, in high detail it is 17 MB and 860 tiles.
In standard detail it is 580 KB and 82 tiles.

So for highest detail 60MB is the max. right now?

When I started with Birdseye (a year ago), 70-75 MB was a normal download, only the last 3 or 4 months I had downloads of 200+ MB.
When gone over the limit the download wouldn't start, maybe that something is going wrong with the download limit.

J.W.Lawrence maybe found a part of the problem here.

I'm able to repeat the findings of J.W.Lawrence - tried a number of test downloads of smaller selections and found that the resolution appears to be correct. This is quite a frustrating issue for us since we won't know the resolution until the downloaded image is inspected and compared...and we'll have to repeat this each time we want to expand the coverage.

Hopefully the developers will be able to fix this soon. I also hope they don't fix the download size of the highest detail setting to too low a value.

    I did a little test.
    At 77MB I had a good download, 5189 images.
    At 80MB I had a bad download, 109 images.

So don't go above 77 MB for now, until it is fixed.
  • It's not consistent at all. I was able to do a 5000+ image 71MB download, but then selected another area which it said was going to be 21MB of high res and it downloaded 160 images of low res.

It's broken and buggy, I am not surprised it is also inconsistent.

Damn!…I spoke too soon. I've now tried quite a number of smaller download sizes (and compared different detail settings) but, unfortunately, I am also finding great inconsistency with the detail setting chosen - primarily with the highest setting - to that displayed either in Basecamp or in my unit.

For me, one of the main selling points of these Garmin products (and the 550t I bought recently) was the ability to make use of high definition satellite imagery in a GPS device. It it clearly a big selling point. I realise there are (apparently) ways to place your own satellite imagery sources (e.g. Google Maps/Earth) onto these units. I've not had a good look into this, though from what I've seen it might be difficult/cumbersome. I'll definitely look into this no matter what since some sources data may be less obstructed (e.g. cloud cover/image consistency across a working area) than others.

However (/Ideally) if Garmin were able to sort this out then most users (me included) would prefer their own route, using BaseCamp and the subscription.
I hope Garmin realise the amount of work we have done to look into this – and the amount of time wasted, since no happy resolution (no pun intended) was seen.
So please, guys, make sure this fault is placed in a realistic position in your priority list.....don't let it remain for "some time". You've got fantastic products with great feature sets....including - potentially!! - BirdsEye Select.
p.s. I don’t think I’d be alone in asking again: are you making any progress on this?
  • Any progress on this from Garmin? The current highest image quality stinks - I just downloaded a set of images adjacent to an older set and scanning across the two the quality difference is immense. The service is well near useless at this point.

I hope this gets resolved soon. I am also getting very inconsistent downloads and inconsistent descriptions of downloaded area filesize. I can download one area with excellent resolution and then another adjacent to it will look poor. Very frustrating.
