A beta version of BaseCamp 3.2 is available (link below). Please read the following:

Warning

This is beta software, or an early peak at an incomplete product. We value your input, so we are providing this to you so that you can send us your comments and ideas. We have tested this beta version extensively, but that doesn't mean that there won't be bugs. Use at your own risk.

Notes

  • Please backup your existing data from BC 3.1 before running the beta.
  • The beta build requires you to allow Garmin to collect statistics on how you use BaseCamp to help us improve the application. This will be optional for the release of BaseCamp 3.2, but it is a required condition for using the beta.

Changes

Changes listed below are above and beyond the previous beta

  • Improved routing
  • BirdsEye downloads should now work
  • Added dragging photos onto the map views
  • Added dragging files into My Collection and the user data list
  • Added activity profile selection dialog at startup, improved migration of existing route settings and routes
  • Added better preserving app state when restarting (selected tool, selected folder, selected view modes, etc)
  • Added support for restoring backups from different computers
  • Changed drawing style of routes and tracks to use thinner lines
  • Fixed issue with adding and removing links on various property tabs
  • Various improvements to the draw order slider for imagery
  • Improved find address near center of screen
  • Removed filtered routes
  • Removed the "Route style" group box from the route options since it doesn't make sense to have multiple "Direct" route profiles.

  • Thinner tracks - looks great !!!! No, even better than great.
    Faster startup - awesome !!
Faster panning and map re-draw - yet more great work !!!!
Popup properties tab - now I can have it appear on my 2nd monitor !!! Yes !!!

But what have you done with the F11 function? Now you only gain the upper part of the screen?
Please make the Library a "tear off tab" - to allow the option of placing it on a 2nd monitor as well. Perhaps a feature that could be enabled / disables in the Tools > Option Tab to avoid confusing users that are not advanced or tech savvy - ie you have to intentionally enable / disable it ?

And yet again a request to be able to enable to switch on / off various individual lists in my collection. My Geocaches, tracks, waypoints and routes all fall on top of one another. Sometimes I want Birdseye to show, sometimes not. This would help greatly in uncluttering the screen.

Otherwise the improvements are a huge step forwards.. Compliments to the developers.

    Suggestions?

I posted a list of suggestions at the end of the previous Beta thread. Can you acknowledge that you are reviewing them? I'm worried that MapSource development has ceased and BaseCamp currently does not meet the needs of motorcycle routing. It has no way to set via points on intersections (Map Intersection type in MapSource) so that the Zumo can have unannounced, unflagged via shaping points. It does not show POIs under the hovering mouse to select an intersection. It does not route the same as the GPS, no matter what the preference slider setting.
  • Data Filter Grayed Out

Why are the Data Filter items grayed out when the list is in the left column? Is this intentional in the beta? I would like to display for example only tracks. I could do that with the previous rev.

Also, I sure would like to be able to control what displays on the map window. For example, just tracks or even just certain tracks.

Also, I would like to be able to display more than one map at a time. This could get me trails and topo info at the same time. My Oregon can do this.

Also, I still cannot easily tell what items are in my collection and what are in sub-folders. I try to keep my hike tracks in one folder and bike rides in another. Then I export them for use in other software. I have no easy way to tell if a track is in my collection or in the hike folder unless there is a small number of them and I can check each one.

For me, the previous rev of Basecamp would be fine if I could get real folders and not have my heart rate info stripped out of my tracks. It seems that this new rev tries to make too many changes that are not improvements for me.
  • Overall quite OK so far, but my flight tracks are fixed on ground elevation in 3D view? (Or am I missing something?) Also, kindly consider to show two elevation profiles, the 'track over ground' profile when a DEM is available, as well as a separate track showing the 'actual elevation profile’.
    Thank you

I thought we had a Wish List here--but maybe it was on MapSource. Anyway--I would like for you to add a location to a Folder, which is the default Import from location. Every time i open BC, it reverts to Doc & Settings. I keep my Tracks in multiple folders on a different drive. I have not looked in the registry for the default location--is it there?

Just an observation---I assume it is your usage tracking for this beta, but if i am not connected to the internet--BC doesn't always load. It always loads, but takes a long time to display the map after the initial portion of the load.

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!

We do read and create create cases for pretty much everything we get reported.

    1. **** If one sets a default route color, then why is it not used for new routes, this stupid behaviour has plagued me since a long time. I cannot make use of pink, I like light grey more. But setting it as default just makes it top of the list of choosable colors, not default color.

    3. **** Autorouting over large distances is still better in Mapsource. Haven't spend much time with it yet however. Much improved over 3.2.0.1 and faster time vs shorter distance seems to be working again. Mapsource 6.16.3 is however ahead in route quality (tested with several maps).

4b. **** It would be great if there was a possibility for 1-2 custom profiles with custom names. That way one could use for example bicycle faster route and bicycle shorter distance without breaking other profiles to use it. Also easier to remember if it were done that way.

    7. The additional statistics on the altitude profile are great. Except the last one. "Grade" between start and finish is not really something needed. Average grade would be a more useful measure. Also average incline of the way when clicking into the profile were great (so on a steep ascent you could click bottom and top point, and get the averaged incline for the ascent). Even better would be two measures. Average incline on uphill, and average incline on downhill sections.

    1. Where do you set the default route color? There is no such setting in BaseCamp.

    3. Do you have examples for Garmin maps where routing is worse than in MS 6.16.3?

4b. Custom route profiles would be cool. We want to do it, it just didn't make this release.

    7. We will probably add more and/or different stats. So any feedback on what would be useful is very welcome.

I downloaded the 3.2.0.1 Beta and installed it.
Went smoothly. When I started the Beta it came right up.
I didn't immediately notice that there were little progress bars on my maps.
I assume the new release is migrating those maps.
Anyway, I might suggest a little pop-up window that would appear for migrating users to let them know that this migration process is going to run and may take a few minutes to complete. It did take a while for mine to finish. 10 minutes?

We don't migrate any maps, what you are seeing is probably us reading the maps from your device? That usually takes a little time, especially if it is the first time we see that device.

    2. I ALWAYS like my Track at the bottom of the pane under Library, which was default a few versions ago. When exiting BC, it would be nice if my selection stuck, so next time I open BC, I don't have to reselect the Sort. If there is a registry key which needs changing, please point me to the correct one.
    3. I should have suggested this many moons ago--Make a City name larger than the other text--like the street names, lake names, etc. Or make them Bold. Even zoomed down to show every street name in a small town, the city/town name does not stand out. The Waypoint names are bigger than the other text, so they stands out.

    Thanks for nice improvements,
    Ron

    2. I am confused as to what you mean. We do remember the view (data or map view) and also the sorting (in data view). Could you eleborate?

    3. We'll see what we can do. This most likely will not make it into 3.2 though.
  • Something else to request - would it be at all possible to import data (.gpx, .gdb etc) into an existing list in My Collection? Currently when you import data a new list is created which is not always desirable. I guess what would work would be an"Import" option when you right click on a List in My Collection.

    - Another point, where I was asking for several times:
The tool for adding tracks together should be made in the same simple way as it is done in MapSource with the tracktool.
Try it out in MapSource and you will understand, what I mean. ;)

There are no plans to port this feature. While one could argue that the MapSource track join tool is more powerful, it's also hard to discover and maybe a bit more advanced than we like.

I think the track join tool in BaseCamp works pretty intuitively without requiring mouse acrobatics.
