I realize I may be somewhat spoiled as a GIS guy using ArcMap all the time. But at the same time I don't believe that the age of the printed map has quite disappeared yet for recreational users, particularly for back country users.
Basemap and MapSource both need printing tools that will allow user defined scales and grids. If nothing else, at the very, very least the more common scales: 1:10k, 1:24k, 1:50k, and a 1km grid. Yes, I know how to make a romer from the scale printed on the map, but there's a reason they make map protractors.
