I have :
- Etrex Legend Hcx (without altimeter)
- BaseCamp 3.1.3
- Topo France V2
I am puzzled that :
1) During a hike, the Etrex constantly displays correct elevation as read from the loaded Topo map DEM.
But :
2) The GPX recorded during the same hike contains very bad elevation data, taken from some calculation from satelites?!
Why cannot it record the elevation that it displays, as well as it records the position that it displays??? Is there a parameter to change somewhere on the GPS unit to achieve that?
Additionnally :
3) When I create a track directly with BaseCamp, it also records the right elevations from the loaded topo map.
Attached are 2 screen captures of the same point :
Method 2) From a GPX file recorded by Etrex Legend Hcx (without altimeter, with TOPO France V2 loaded). [Wrong] elevation : 104m.
Method 3) Created as waypoint in BaseCamp with the same TOPO France V2 loaded. [Right] elevation : 74m.
On the Mac forum, I was told that they had a command named "Set Point(s) to map elevation", that transformed the wrong elevations from the GPS unit into the right ones from the map DEM :
Double click the track to bring up the track window. Click the gear at the lower left corner of the track window. If you don't have a topo map selected, the third item down the list (Set Point(s) to map elevation) will be grayed out.
So, if it is mysteriously not possible for the GPS unit to record directly the right elevation that it can read and display from the map DEM, is there a similar command in the Windows version to correct the elevation once we have uploaded the data in BaseCamp?
Thank you!
