A beta version of BaseCamp 3.2 is available (link below). Please read the following:

Warning

This is beta software, or an early peak at an incomplete product. We value your input, so we are providing this to you so that you can send us your comments and ideas. We have tested this beta version extensively, but that doesn't mean that there won't be bugs. Use at your own risk.

Notes
  • Please backup your existing data from BC 3.1 before running the beta.
  • The beta build requires you to allow Garmin to collect statistics on how you use BaseCamp to help us improve the application. This will be optional for the release of BaseCamp 3.2, but it is a required condition for using the beta.
  • We know that routing (especially long routes) have issues. We are working on the issue.
  • Activity profiles are still a work in progress, in particular migrating existing routing options.
  • We have had intermittent success testing BirdsEye Select because of some oddities with the servers. Please let us know your experience.

Changes
  • Moved the various property tabs to a separate dialog
  • Added swapping the map and data list UI regions
  • Added activity profiles to allow easier changes between common routing configurations
  • Added geocache search integration with OpenCaching.com
  • Added photo sharing site upload (currently for Picasa)
  • Added track statistics that correspond to the selection in the track points list
  • Added additional statistics to the elevation profile
  • Added display of elevation profile when batch editing routes or tracks
  • Added heart rate and cadence to the track points list and elevation profile
  • Added route to track conversion
  • Added display mode for geocaches
  • Added the "Duplicate" menu item for most user data types
  • Added continuation of route/track drawing when switching between tools
  • Added route avoidance checkboxes to the route options (such as "Avoid U-turns")
  • Added a basic dialog for creating routes
  • Added draw order control for new BirdsEye Imagery that is downloaded
  • Added user selection of application language (the beta is English only, so this doesn't have much of an impact yet)
  • Added option to restore the application to default settings
  • Added tips dialog when entering full screen mode
  • Added a keyboard shortcut to snap the map back to North up
  • Added file import/export support for the TCX file format.
  • Added file export support for tab-delimited and comma-delimited text
  • Added properties and create waypoint commands to the list of POIs that is displayed when hovering on the map
  • Added optional collection of analytics to help us improve the application
  • Added display of the detailed coverage region of card/device based maps
  • Added notification to user when updates are available for devices
  • Added receiving FIT course points and activity data from many fitness devices. These are converted into waypoints and tracks.
  • Changed geotagging photos from a track to add links to those photos in the track
  • Changed to not allow changing the location of geocaches when they are part of a route
  • Changed the divide tool to create a new waypoint or trackpoint at the division point
  • Fixed issue where we didn't always remove all waypoints created as part of a route

You folks have been busy. So far I like it, except 2 things:
    1. Being required to submit data to you about what and how I use it.
    2. I like the Cadence & HR displayed---but

Perhaps Cadence and Heart Rate were never intended to be saved if you edited a .gpx file, like moving 1 trackpoint, and then exporting it. It does not delete data in the original file. If that's your intent, well so be it, if it's not you have a bug. Exporting an edited track causes ALL Cadence to be lost in the saved track. I don't have any HR data handy, so I can't verify it is lost forever also.

If this is your intent--Please put a Warning somewhere about editing a file with Cadence/Heart Rate and then saving it under the same name.

I use my Oregon 450 to record my data.

    Converting Track to Route:

    • Why would you use a completely different approach to this feature on Windows BC than is used on Mac BC?

This divergence of operation is extremely confusing to those of us that need to use both OS platforms.

But, it seems as though BC-Win and BC-Mac are growing with different feature priorities. I was really hoping to see with this beta that both BC's were going to use the same GDB file format with Folders, Smart Lists and Smart Folders so that both BC's could share the same AllData.dgb and FolderData.gfi files.

Is there ever going to be a convergence of the UI (major operations) and features for the two OS's?

With each version, both teams are addressing functionality that the other side has. There are some features on the Mac side that the Windows side doesn't have, and the opposite is true too.

That being said, there are some features that are considered platform specific and may never make it to the other side. The "smart list" concept is one of these. They are fairly common in other applications on the Mac, I haven't seen a Windows application use this concept.

I can appreciate that the two teams are addressing different issues at different times. I can also appreciate "platform specific" conventions and constraints.

When there is a feature-function (Track-to-Route Conversion) that has the same operational intent on both OS's, why should the outcome of that operation be different? The outcome is completely independent of the OS.

It is very disappointing to hear that you consider Smart Lists (List Folders?) an OS dependent feature when is clearly is not. How about calling them something different in Windows but provide the same operation?

Based upon your comments I would surmise that there is no design convergence plan for the two BaseCamps. Which would preclude sharing of databases between the two platforms ever. True?

Hope it's OK with you that I post this observation. Since I'm testing both Mac and Win beta releases, I tried the latest Macv3.2.0.9 Backup file with the Winv3.2.0.1 Restore since the Mac release notes said "across platform".

All of the data was restored by the Win-beta. It was a bit ironic that the Mac-beta "Smart List's" in my Backup file were displayed with "folder-icons" in the Win-beta's My Collection's list.

Does this mean you will do List Folders? :D

One update to using the Mac Backup in a Restore: none of the Tracks had properties data. When I tried to double-click on a Track showing on the map BaseCamp-beta crashed (no crash report was offered).

I like the new UI. The program loads much faster than the 3.1 version.Nevertheless, I have a few remarks/wishes:
    • Is it possible to make the Properties window dockable?
    • I would really, really like a folder structure to organize my collection
    • Is it possible to add waypoint symbols? E.g. a church, a castle, etc.

There are a lot of good ideas here, and I am taking notes. Please don't expect an individual reply to each idea. If you think something needs a more in-depth conversation, please start a new thread about it.

    Can't install the beta

I don't know how you all have gotten the beta to install. I downloaded it to my Windows 7 64-bit system where I'm already running BaseCamp 3.1.3 but when I run the download it stays at 0% extracted. I guess it really is beta+ :(

Please try to download it again. I downloaded it 2 days ago to my personal Win7 x64 PC and it worked just fine.
