feature request: keep heart rate information

Hi all,

I own a foretrex 401 and a heart rate monitor. The pairing is fine, I can see the heart rate at foretrex display.
I can see (sometimes) the heart rate graphs when I upload a track to garmin connect, but some of the tracks I'd like to chop some pieces off or split them, which I need to use basecamp.

From my experiences (trial and error), when I export a file in GPX format to be able to manual upload to garmin connect, I don't have the heart rate information anymore.

I've seen in the changelog of the mac beta version that it displays now the heart rate info. Is there any beta version for windows or when could we expect this feature to be implemented ?

(Most notably If the foretrex's battery is gone and I power it up some kilometers away, it gets a bit "crazy" until it have the GPS signal lock. The only garmin software (that I've tried) that recognizes foretrex as a device is basecamp, thus I really need to edit my tracks into basecamp before uploading.)

The beta is available now, and it has support for displaying (and preserving) heart rate info.

Please could you tell me how to obtain this beta version of BaseCamp for Windows. I'm using version 3.1.3 and it doesn't appear to retain the heart rate data.

I also notice that whilst the heart rate data is stored on the Foretex in the ACTIVE LOG track segments, it is not stored (or not stored correctly) in saved tracks.

I can't speak directly to HeartRate data, but I can for Cadence from my Oregon 450 with latest firmware.
3.2.0.2 definitely does NOT save Cadence. I doubt that it does for HR either, but I'll try and remember to to use my HR monitor next time i go for a ride.

In fact, while in BC if you delete a Waypoint, as an example, BC must automatically rewrite the .gpx file. When it rewrites it--it leaves off the Cadence data. My guess is--it does that with HR also!

I posted something similar to this on the 3.2.0.2 sticky thread above last week.

To the OP, using Windows Explorer, Copy the .GPX file from you GPSr to a safe location or 2, and keep one of those unused. If you use Garmin Training Center, you gotta use TCX converter to convert a GPX file to a TCX file. This will preserve your HR & Cad data. You can, altho I haven't tried it, convert that TCX file back to a GPX file to use in BC---if you need to.

I suggest to ERACREZ & FALAGAR--remove the display of HR & Cadence in BC, and just preserve the data--it's MUCH more important to save it. Garming Training Center, as well as Garmin Connect display both HR & Cad just fine. You can remove HR & Cad in those programs, but you can't in BC. It's almost too much clutter on the screen.

  • 9. Added heart rate and cadence to the track points list and elevation profil

I was really waiting for this update, because I was thinking it would also fix the problem with editing track files. However I had to find out that any editing of track logs (renaming, adding notes or deleting tack points will still delete the heart rate and cadence information.

I already lost the heart rate information on several irrecoverable hiking track logs by using BaseCamp.

If a third party software would do this I might be able to understand, but why a genuine Garmin software destroys user date remains a secret to me.

My last test was with BaseCamp 3.2.0.2 beta.

I'm now on BaseCamp version 3.2.1 (PC Windows).

It's good to see that it is now able to import heart rate data from the Foretrex 401 and to overlay the heart rate data on the elevation profile (something Google Earth can't do).

However, I'm very disappointed to discover that BaseCamp still does not include the heart rate data in exported files. I've tried all the available file formats. It's already caused me to lose the heart rate data from my last walk. Not good.

Please can this issue be addressed as a high priority.

We will be working on that. We'll try to get this into 3.2.2.

It might have to wait for 3.3, however.

I've just installed BaseCamp version 3.2.2 and am very pleased to find that it now supports for exporting of fitness data in tracks. So I can now export tracks and later reload them into BaseCamp without losing my heart rate data.

As an added bonus I notice that Google Earth version 6 does not compress imported track data so severely if they contain heart rate data, meaning that tracks are now displayed and measured more accurately.

    Thank you Garmin application developers.
