24k topo printing and viewing

Hi. New to the forumn.

I recently received an Oregon 450 and the topo 24k maps on an SD card and I am having 2 main issues.

First, how can I view the topo maps on basecamp without removing the SD card from my GPS that is plugged into the computer and placing the SD card in my SD card reader of the computer. Basecamp will see everything else on my GPS, but the topo maps. Can I install these maps directly to my computer?

Second, how can I print these 24k topo maps. I would live to be able to print some maps with waypoints and routes I have created, but have not figured out how to. Ideally I would print the map with the birdseye maps overlayed on the topo maps and my GPS data.

Any help or thoughts is appreciated.

In order to see maps on Garmin uSD cards in BaseCamp, the uSD card needs to be in the GPS that is connected to the computer.

BaseCamp has a print option under the FILE tab. I never tried it though. Since BaseCamp can display only one mapset at a time, I don't think you can print a combo map. OTOH, the Oregon can display several layers of maps on screen (it they are transparent). You can then save the screen and print that, small maps though. To have a real combo print out, check out www.topofusion.com Topofusion Pro is a wonderful mapping program.

Unfortunately BaseCamp doesn't allow printing of maps that are sold on cards. This limitation is there to prevent possible licensing issues with the map content. We are investigating solutions for this problem in future releases.

A possible way around this limitation is to use a screen dump utility.

    ERACERZ,
When I bought the SD card was there anything out there that told me I couldn't print from this? I don't recall anything that said either way. Does any of the other map products allow you to print the topo maps (download or CD)?

Another work-around is to download 24K maps from www.gpsfiledepot.com. You can use those in BaseCamp and/or MapSource and these should print, definitely from MapSource. I have not tried BaseCamp printing.

Most products that are installed directly to the desktop do allow printing, there are only a few exceptions where the data license prevents this. I believe in these cases BaseCamp notifies you of the restriction. Examples of the exception are some topo maps in Great Britain and some street maps in Australia or New Zealand. There are also Garmin licensed 3rd party maps that have the option of disabling this feature.

Anything sold on CD or DVD has a good chance of supporting printing. Things that are downloaded can go either way. It depends if it is downloaded as a single file that is placed on the GPS (or memory card) or if it is installed to the desktop after download.
