Newbie to basecamp....Ok I just ordered the Garmin Edge 800 with MicroSD card City Navigator for U.S., Canada....it is on its way hasnt arrived. So I thought I would map out a route for next weekend using Basecamp which I just downloaded so I'd have it ready to go. I've ridden many back country roads in the Kerrville, Texas area but those roads do not appear no matter how much I zoom in. I know those roads are there..small little country roads. My question is: Is that the way Basecamp is always gonna look with poor detail or can I use the MicroSD card that's on is way or do I need to buy/download other maps? Total newbie any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Sounds like you are using what is called a basemap with BaseCamp. A basemap has only basic map information. To get detailed information, you need what are called 'detailed maps'. The city navigator map you bought is a detailed map. If u haven't installed any maps yet and you haven't connected a device with a detailed map, then you are indeed using the basemap called 'Global map' that comes for free with BaseCamp.
Once u get the device and the map in the mail, u will see much more map data in BaseCamp.
Thank you for the reply....yes the more I read I'm starting to figure this out. Now I know I cannot use the purchased maps on my computer to pre-plan my riding routes. It looks like I always have to connect my edge unit to be able to use city nav maps in BaseCamp ....wish I knew before hand....garmin really wants to project their maps...at tad frustrating for paying customers. When the unit arrives I will give them a call to see if I can somehow get the DVD. Thanks again for your help.
When you get your City Navigator card, copy the entire contents to a USB flash drive. I believe that Basecamp will treat this exactly the same as the original card and you can use it on your computer for trip planning.
The map is copy protected so that it cannot be copied and used on another GPS, but I don't believe that restriction applies to using it with Basecamp.
OST is correct--I copied the City Nav from my Oregon 450 to use in BaseCamp and MapSource with no problem. I do not need my GPSr connected to use it. I can NOT copy the Rails to Trails maps tho, but i found out the hard way--they are a total waste of money, provide no waypoints, gotta zoom into 2 miles to see any trail and they use the basemap--which as you found--has NO detail---a real PoS!
You'll find some links to Topo maps which contain the same detail (for roads) that CN does, along with the elevation lines--actually where i live it is more accurate than CN.
And once you get your map installed, don't forget to send for your "free" update disk.
Go here: https://my.garmin.com and set up an account. I'm pretty sure you'll need your Edge with your CN SD installed, connected to your computer, so Garmin can "verify" you have a Garmin device. Garmin will "look" at your Edge and see which version of CN you have installed and list updates which are available to you, both as a cost and free. In my case, it listed the free update, i applied for it via my.garmin.com and received a CD or DVD a few weeks later for me to install the map (i originally bought CN on a disk).
You may need to install WebUpdater--but my.garmin will let you know:)
