importing old gpb files in Basecamp (newb here)

After various searches and many 'dead ends' I'm unable to find an explantion to my lack of understanding regarding gpb files as they are imported into Basecamp.
My setup: Basecamp 3.12, Oregon 550 (newest firmware), Windows 7 and some older .gpb files from my Garmin 60cs and Mapsource.

I installed Basecamp and 'imported' one of the gpb files of a Hawaii Hike.
When I looked at the track list in Basecamp it appears that all of my track files (gdb) that I had on my computer were now in Basecamp when I thought I was only importing one set of tracks (one gdb file). Can anyone suggest why this might be the case?

Second question: When I open some of my track files in Basecamp, they have other tracks from other hikes within them. I thought I was smart so I simply deleted those extra tracks out and re-saved the gdb file back to the hard drive. But when I reload the gdb they're back in there?!

The only files I've saved from my own Garmin are gdb files and as far as I know should only contain the tracks of my hikes, some with waypoints.

Can anyone give me a basic '101' understanding of these files, how to edit out erronous tracks and re-save them, or, better yet, if there is something specifically documented for this, point this newb in the right direction?

Not sure what happened but the last time I imported a GDB into Basecamp it simply imported all data from that one file.

Basecamp saves its data in a single GDB file (AllData.gdb). When you say "re-saved" do you mean that you exported to a GDB? If so Basecamp doesn't use that file again unless you explicitly import again. You don't use Basecamp like MapSource--that is but storing different data in different files. With Basecamp everything is in the "library" (AllData.gdb).

That said Basecamp allows multiple "lists" to be created in the library so you can separate data even though its all in one file (AllData.gdb).

Yes, I mean to say I re-exported the file back to the location on the hard drive that I got it from.
If Basecamp uses only one file for all of the data, how does one 'clean up' erronous tracks. I assume if I use the backup feature, I'm backing up the alldata.gdb file?

You just delete them. However there's no "saving" to a file as such (I don't recall if you get a prompt to "save changes" when you exit).

    I think so yes.

Again the idea in Basecamp is to keep stuff organized in "lists". You create them by right-clicking on "My Collection" and selecting "Add New List to Library". You can then move/copy data (tracks/routes/waypoints) to your lists. See the "Managing Your Data" topic in Help..
