geotags pictures in BaseCamp

I don't understand, the geotag pictures work well in the gpsmap 62s but they don't appear in BaseCamp. They are in my collection, this is correct. In BaseCamp they are not list in the gps folder, i can see it with my explorer and i can see it directly in the gps.

If i resend from My collection, they appear but when i eject my gps and reconnect they always disapear.

Do you have any suggestions ?

    The 62s actually does not support receiving geotagged photos. And we should be catching that before allowing you to send photos to it.

    We are working on a fix for the next release.

    Is the fix available yet?

    Still have the error when sending geotagged photos from Basecamp to the GPS (62st). I can copy files manually but it would be nice this bug to be fixed.
    Is it yet?

    The fix that went into BaseCamp 3.2.1 was to not try to make BaseCamp send GeoTagged photos to devices that do not support it.

    The old behavior was that BaseCamp pretended to be able to send Geotagged photos to the 62, only to fail in the transfer.

    Now, the user is notified as soon as he/she tries to send to the 62 that the device doesn't support this feature.

    If you look at your GarminDevice.xml, if it doesn't have these lines in it (copied from an Orgegon 450 that does support receiving Geotagged photos):

    <DataType>
    <Name>GeotaggedPhotos</Name>
    <File>
    <Specification>
    <Identifier>JPG</Identifier>
    </Specification>
    <Location>
    <Path>Garmin/JPEG</Path>
    <FileExtension>JPG</FileExtension>
    </Location>
    <TransferDirection>InputOutput</TransferDirection>
    </File>
    </DataType>

    then it doesn't support Geotagged photos. None of the 62s I could test with in the office advertise the capability to accept Geotagged photos.

    So this would be more a request to the device team, as soon as the 62 advertises to receive Geotagged photos, BaseCamp will happily send them.

    PS: Maybe a bit more of an explanation: The GarminDevice.xml file is a file the device writes out indicating what kind of data it "understands". BaseCamp relies on this file to tell it what to do with a device.

    I am not sure what you mean by 'a device that does not support geotagged photos'. My whole point is based on the fact that the GPSMAP 62st DOES support geotagged pictures - see here and any other spec description of this product:
    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=63802

    This is confirmed by the fact that I can easily copy geotagged pictures in both, internal memory and SD card, and the device shows them on the map and you can click and visualize them on the device screen with no problems.

    So the 62 st DOES support geotagged pictures.

    Having clarified that, the bug I was referring to is that Basecamp does not know that, hence the error.
    I appreciate the technical explanation of why the error appears but that does not help solving the problem, which I would imagine is for Garmin to deliver a fix whereby Basecamp understands that geotagged pictures ARE supported by the 62st and therefore they can be sent to it.

    As a customer when writing in this forum I am talking to Garmin about what is clearly a bug that can only be solved by a technical fix. If you internally have a different team to handle this please feel free to forward this to them.

    Hope I have clarified what the problem is and looking forward to the solution.

    The 62 does not currently support RECEIVING geotagged photos (oddly though, it does support navigating to them if you transfer them manually). I agree that the specs are somewhat deceiving in that they imply that this should work, and it's an overall clunky user experience.

    I just tried to explain what the fix was on BaseCamp's end, and why we don't consider it a bug in BaseCamp. I am a developer after all, not a marketing or product support guy. :)

    Of course you are entirely correct that you shouldn't need to worry about any of this and just want a fix that works for you.

    Which is why I have contacted someone on the device team and have requested the 62 to accept geotagged photos, so hopefully this will be possible with a future firmware release.

    Thank you - and I will also send an email to support to reinforce the message.

    It seems such a small (and stupid) limitation also because if I select to send the pics to the SD card it works with no issues, even though the card is inside the device so from an 'user' perspective there is no difference between the GPS memory or the SD card - it's still memory.

    Thanks again.

    There should be a fix in one of the next firmware releases.

    In the meantime, wouldn't it be possible for XML-literate users to simply copy/paste the XML code above into the GarminDevice.xml file to make it work? .... After making a backup copy or two of the original, of course. :)

    Or is there something else that needs to be done to make it work on the device?

    That would be possible, but you'd have to do it every time you connect the device (because the device re-writes it whenever it detects a USB connection with the computer).

    Forgot about that. So it's just easier to manually copy the images to the SD card unless/until the device developers fix it.
