Hi, I can not make BaseCamp run on my Win XP. Always, it Gives me only error that setting file has become corrupted. And than it asks me to delete it manually. But there are no files to be deleted.
The user.config file that is mentioned in the screenshot is a Windows configuration file that stores settings information about .NET Forms. To troubleshoot,
1. Did this start happening all of a sudden, or has BaseCamp never run for you? If it started happening recently, do you remember any changes to your system like installation of anti-virus that happened around the same time as the issue started? If it has never run for you, is there anything special about the Windows user account or user privilege that could cause it to not access that path?
2. Did you install BaseCamp using the installer from here, or did you get it from somewhere else? If you got it from somewhere else, it could be some sort of installation issue- I would suggest reinstalling from the link above.
Did you ever figure out what the cause of this problem was? I have the same issue when trying to start Basecamp. Says file corrupt and to manually delete file that is not there. thanks
I've been dealing with this issue for the past month.
I have tried:
1) Uninstalling every Garmin product, then wiping all traces of the product on my HD and registry.
2) Reinstalling all products + Basecamp
Several times with the same result. Basecamp corrupted.
Reinstalling .NET framework 3.5 or 4.0 did not solve the issue.
I am seriously considering returning all Garmin products and switching to a company that supports it's customers and doesn't make their software procedures excessively complicated. Seems to me that Garmin is more focused on squeezing every penny and second out of their customers than making them satisfied with their purchase.
Did you know that Garmin was developed with US defense funding that built the GPS satellite system which it uses today? So, here we have a company that relies on technology built with funds from the defense budget that is currently tightening it's financial restrictions on the accessories to it's hardware products.
I am freaking angry as hell that this issue hasn't been resolved!
I contact support through their support contact forum. My original message: I recently purchased a Garmin Oregon 450. My OS is Windows XP SP3.
I recently purchased "Trip and Waypoint Manager: CD-ROM".
I installed Mapsource and updated to Version 6.15.11.0 via the webupdate option.
I purchased "Topo US 2008" via an online dealer as Garmin has discontinued this product. Was able to find at:
I downloaded Basecamp. Installed Basecamp successfully.
Upon running application I get the following error:
The setting file at C:\Documents and Settings\God\Local Settings\Application Data\Garmin_Corp\Basecamp.exe_Url_od54z5i12i2mmdippm3n40wduf2qoael\3.1.2.0\user.config has could not be deleted. Please manually delete and restart Basecamp
I have attempted to find the file but it does not seem to exist. I have fully uninstalled, wiped registry as well as directorys "Program Files", "Temp", "Application Data". Reinstalled all programs. I continue to get the same error.
Please help!
Their initial response:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be more than happy to assist you. I do apologize that you are experiencing difficulties.
The following is a list of common issues that could cause this error:
1. Make sure the disc is clean; no fingerprints, smudges etc. 2. Check the disc for any signs of damage. 3. Make sure you are logged as administrator with full administrator rights. 4. Disable any security programs that are active.
If the problem continues you can try an alternate install:
1. Create a folder on the hard drive and copy the contents of the disc into the new file, 2. Open the new folder and locate the setup.exe or data.exe file 3. Double click on the file to begin the install.
Please advise us if you need any further assistance on this issue.

I am thoroughly disappointed with the details of your response! I went into great detail explain my issue and the details of my attempts to fix it. Your response indicates that you either did not receive my full message or you did not read it in detail.
Please confirm that you Did or did not receive my original message.
I recommend you try again as I will make a complaint to your management via phone tomorrow by lunch PST.
Their most recent response:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I would be glad to assist you. The file is in a location that is hidden by your operating system. To unhide these files please use the steps below.
1. Open My computer 2. In my computer click tools and then folder options 3. In folder options click the view tab 4. In the view tab select the show hidden files and folders option and take the checkmark out of hide protected system files 5. Click on apply
I would then recommend completely removing all Garmin products using the steps below to insure that everything has been removed, including the registry information.
To remove Garmin programs go to the add/remove programs and uninstall all Garmin and Mapsource. Once you have removed all the programs, you will now need to clear the registry. I have included the steps for Windows XP.
Uninstalling Garmin software
1. Click the Start menu. 2. Click Run..., that should bring up a window labeled as Run. Inside the Run window there is a box labeled as Open:. 3. Clear anything typed inside the Open: box. 4. Type appwiz.cpl into the Open: box. 5. Click OK. That should bring up a window labeled as Add or Remove Programs. 6. Click each application that starts with Garmin, MapSource or City from the list individually and then click the Remove button on the right. 7. Close the Add or Remove Programs window when all Garmin software is removed.
Clearing the registry
1. Click the Start menu. 2. Click Run..., that should bring up a window labeled as Run. Inside the run window there is a box labeled as Open:. 3. Clear anything typed inside the Open: box. 4. Type regedit into the Open: box. 5. Click OK. That should open the Registry Editor. 6. Click File in the upper left-hand corner of the Registry Editor window. 7. Click Export... from the File menu. This will open a window labeled as Export Registry File. 8. Change the Save in to your Desktop and change the File name to Backup. 9. Make sure All is selected from the Export range option. 10. Click Save.
In the left window of the Registry Editor window, you will see folders labeled as HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
11. Click the + next to the folder labeled as HKEY_CURRENT_USER. 12. Click the + next to SOFTWARE, when you click on this it will expand your registry further. 13. Right-click on the word GARMIN and select Delete. 14. Select Yes in the Confirm Key Delete window that comes up 15. Click the - signs next to the previously expanded folders. 16. Click the + next to the folder labeled as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 17. Click the + next to SOFTWARE, when you click on this it will expand your registry further. 18. Right-click on the GARMIN folder and select Delete. 19. Select Yes in the Confirm Key Delete window that comes up. 20. Click the - signs next to the previously expanded folders. 21. Close the Registry Editor window. 22. Re-start your computer.
After you have restarted your computer, install the Topo West CD, then BaseCamp. Here is a link to BaseCamp.
Though a more detailed response, it failed to resolve the issue
I am now left with a great device which has a disturbingly difficult interface for retrieving device data. I could spend the next month figuring out how to retrieve the data manually or I could return the product and go with another company.
I hope Garmin actively watches these posts. I am at my wits end.
T16.) How do I download saved or archived tracklogs from the Oregon to my computer?
Saved tracks are saved in [drive]:\Garmin\GPX with a filename which contains the name of the track, for example my-track.gpx . Copy this file to your computer and/or open it in your favorite track analysis software.
Automatically archived Tracks are saved in [drive]:\Garmin\GPX\Archive and have filenames like 1.gpx, 2.gpx, etc.
I have just tried and failed to update my existing Basecamp installation to v3.1.3. Each time it downloads the file, starts to unpack it and then ends with an error message saying that the file is corrupt.
The first time I used the Update command in the Basecamp menu, the second time I used the direct link given in this forum. I am using Windows XP, and the existing version is running happily.
Do I need to disable my antivirus program (Norton Internet Security 2011) to download the Basecamp update successfully? (Norton analyses the download and reports that it is safe.)
