BaseCamp Geotagging changed in 3.1.2 - unfortunately

After upgrading to 3.1.2 I noticed the problem of viewing geotagged photos created as waypoints.
Double-clicking on the thumbnail in waypoint properties Microsoft Picture Manager DOES NOT SHOW the photo, instead it shows four icons called Alldata.gdb, Aldata.gdb.bak, FolderData.gfi and FolderData.gfi.bak.
Moreover during geotagging the BaseCamp now creates copies of all geotagged photos (no info on that in help, no possibility to select the folder in spite of the fact that the reason for creating copies is not clear) while still adding the georeference data into the exif of the original photos.
Opening such photo-waypoints in MapSource shows, that the link to the geotagged photo does not reference the original photo but its BaseCamp internal copy.
The problem is that the created link is wrong and therefore double-clicking thumbnail does not show the photo.

Totally understand now BUT when I do double click on the pic as you are suggesting, I get an error message.

Attached is a screen capture of it. I did notice you are doing yours on a MAC, I am doing it on a Windows - XP Pro.

If I go to the listed folder and double clip on the pic or any of them. They do work correctly.

    I am using BaseCamp 3.1.3

Are you using a software called PhotoFiltre?

    found bug - I think

Yes I like PhotoFiltre - FYI - retired tech/computer teacher after 37 years of junior high. Started with Apple //e - boy things have changed.

PhotoFiltre is very bug free when we used it in our school district.
BUT I think I found the bug. The error message is missing the folder where the pictures are (which it established).

Here is the link where the pics are:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edward Gorny\Application Data\GARMIN\BaseCamp\GeotaggedPhotos

If you look at the error message I sent - it stops at
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edward Gorny\Application Data\GARMIN\BaseCamp\

Missing the folder with the pics. Does this help?

Thanks for taking the time helping us out with this!

Well, I think you definitely have found something odd there. It would also explain why the original poster in this thread was seeing AllData.gdb and others (because those are in the path that you mention).

We'll have to investigate why the path is wrong. Does the same thing happen with photos that you geo-tag now (with BaseCamp 3.1.3) or does this only happen for older Geocached photos (that you already had in your database).

    Geotagging

We teach GPS and we decided to go with BaseCamp over MapSource.
So in writing the manual, I only had the opportunity to try geotagging with 3.1.3.

We decided to add geotagging to our manual - so I tried it, liked it and then had an issue with the size of the picture. In reading some of the post in this forum, it seemed like the same issue I had.

I did retry a new set of pics in a new folder etc, same issue.
So it happened with my first set, second set as well as a third set - which I did just to trouble shoot it to see if it was me or the software.

    follow up

I decided to try moving the pictures to the folder the error message said.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Edward Gorny\Application Data\GARMIN\BaseCamp\

Then tried the pictures in the original attempt and they ALL worked fine.
They did open in the assigned program without any error message.
So whatever generates the link to the folder above has the bug in it - missing the folder that has the pictures in it.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Edward Gorny\Application Data\GARMIN\BaseCamp\GeotaggedPhotos

Thanks, Ed. So far we think this has something to do with Windows XP, because it's working fine on our Vista machines.

Hopefully we'll have a fix soon.

    thanks - schools

    Thanks for dealing with it.
Most schools are running a version of XP in Illinois.
Not many Vista machine in schools.
