Hi I’ve just bought the Dakota 20 and Garmin GB Discoverer Southern England and Wales map on SD card. Managed to get the pc to recognise the Dakota after a while and registered it on the Garmin website and downloaded the web updater programme but not yet updated the Dakota as I was afraid to do that until I asked if that is what I have to do as being a newbie I am a bit reluctant to do anything with it.

I downloaded the latest version of Basecamp after reading up on it not knowing really what to do. I connected the Dakota to Basecamp and it tells me I don’t have the latest drivers to use the 3D facility, I am using Windows XP and display drivers ATI RADEON EXPRESS 200 SERIES Driver version 8.18.0.0 so what is the problem there then do you think?

The basic map already preinstalled on Dakota is very basic and nothing hardly comes up at all on Bascamp. But what do I do with Mapsource as I can’t see any map at all, is it supposed to be like Basecamp? as I can see my own SD card on Basecamp but nothing on Mapsource. Any advice would be very much appreciated and there is a lot more I would like to ask please.
Thanks

I recommend keeping the software on your device up-to-date. If you are worried about losing data, you could backup data you've created on your device to your computer using BaseCamp by copying all the data from your device to 'My Collection'.

To get the latest device driver for your graphics card, you could start at this link on the ATI website. There is a discussion in the BaseCamp FAQ about issues with video drivers and if you search in this forum, you might see how other users were able to correct graphics driver issues.

BaseCamp can read maps off your device while MapSource doesn't. So the behavior you mention is per design.
