Importing Terrain Navigator Maps into BaseCamp

The latest version of myTopo Terrain Navigator lets you import topo maps as Garmin Custom Maps into some of the more recent GPSs. They seem to work OK on my 62s and with GE. Unfortunately BaseCamp doesn't appear to like them and will give an error on either reading the GPS or trying to import the KMZ. I found that apparently it doesn't like something about the ExtendedData field that's in the doc.kml file that part of the KMZ that TN generates. If you need a workaround just try this: Extract the files out of the .KMZ using 7zip (or similar program), edit the doc.kml file and remove everything between <ExtendedData and </ExtendedData>, re-zip all of the files again back to a KMZ. It's worked on one KMZ for me so far that had about 15 tiles.

    This is just one of the many reasons I have stopped using Terrain Navigator. I'm using TopoFusion (Google that), and get much more for much less money! Including MyTopo maps too, BTW,,,

    <ExtendedData>

    Terrain Navigator places information in the <ExtendedData> section of the KMZ file, so that the "Manage GPS Maps" window in Terrain Navigator can display important information about the map, such as its scale and type (topographic or aerial photo.)

    All other KMZ mapping applications that we are aware of (including Google Earth, and the KMZ custom map reader in the 62s) ignore these tags, which is how an XML parser is supposed to handle such information.

    When designing the Send Maps to GPS section of Terrain Navigator, we wanted to ensure that since the GPS supports only a limited number of tiles, that our customers would have the tools required to easily manage their map collection within Terrain Navigator. We felt that it was important that the scale and type of each map be available within the Manage GPS Maps window. While BaseCamp (apparently) is incorrectly attempting to interpret our tags, we are hoping that Garmin will address this as they continue to improve their software.

    As far as any other reasons why one might consider moving from Terrain Navigator to another product, I invite you to correspond with me directly at (or visit our discussion forum at http://maptech.mytopo.com/support/forums/index.cfm) and I will be happy to address any concerns you may have.
