Why is 3D function greyed out

I am running version 3.1.2 of BaseCamp. I have a 24k topo map and would like to use the 3d function. It is greyed out and will not work. The same map downloaded to my Oregon 450 will not display in 3D either.

This is not a Garmin map. Is that required for 3D to be active?

I would ask the author of the map whether it has DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data.

It needs to be an MPC product to use 3D with BaseCamp or GPSr.
