Should BaseCamp show me 3D views of my 3d capable nuvi map?
I have Nuvi 3970t and it shows maps in 3D view but I don't have 3D view option available when I browse maps in BaseCamp 3.1.1.

BaseCamp will show the 3d map depending on whether the particular map that came with your device has DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data. Since BaseCamp isn't showing 3d for you, it seems like BaseCamp isn't finding this data on the map which would have allowed it to create the 3d model.
Video card with support for OpenGL >= v1.3 needed for 3D view
If it's DEM data included then it should be possible to have the 3D map view. One extra requirement is the OpenGL support.
BaseCamp requirements:
* A video card that supports OpenGL version 1.3 or later is needed to enable the 3D view.
I had problems with my laptop drivers for ATI and Windows 7. All laptop drivers are OEM versions and only updated by the laptop computer company. The solution was to use a modder for Desktop -> Laptop conversion. The Windows 7 default graphical driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon didn't support OpenGL.

Looking at the CN Aus & NZ NT 2011.20 it doesn't seem to have DEM data in the MapSource / BaseCamp files. The nüvi 3790T is using the special "GMAPDEM.IMG" for DEM layers and a "GMAP3D.IMG" for 3D buildings.
