live gps?

pardon my ignorance, but is it possible to read live gps data into basecamp? this would be fairly handy.

what i actually want to do is have the garmin gpsmap62s pot direcltly into Mapinfo GIS but i would need to spend abut $3000 to update to the most recent edition which runs an add-in that will now read garmin usb protocol..man they really know how to screw ya dont they!

anyway, i thought there might be a way around this using basecamp

  • Would be nice to have one free Garmin program with all features :)

I think 62s can use NMEA instead of Garmin protocol. And you can try to use programs like gpsgate or spanner to make connection between GIS and GPS.
  • yeah, i did try Spanner on the off chance, but surprise surprise, i can't get it to work.

    I'll give gpsgate a go.

    cheers

BaseCamp is not a live GPS data application.

If you want to try it out live GPS applications, you could take a look at nRoute. It is no longer maintained, but it is free and it might do what you want. Similarly, there is Garmin Mobile PC, but it isn't free. Either case, you should double check elsewhere whether your device will work with these applications.

That nRoute link takes you to a page of info, but the download link is broken. If you want to use nRoute, it is still available here: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/nroute/

Use it at your own risk! I am using it on Windows Vista and Windows 7 with no problems. In fact, I really prefer its map rendering style to the newer Garmin apps when it comes to using topo maps that I make myself. :)

nRoute is nice but it doesn't work satisfying with newer maps like BlueChart G2 or NT, which I would like.
HomePort is good for G2 Charts, but it doesn't read any GPS information form GPS devices neither.
I believe Garmin is not interested in any PC software reading GPS data from devices anymore - there is not enough money coming out of it, Garmin wants to sell its devices!

I don't know about bluechart, but do a google search for "MapReverseConverter" and you will find a way to use NT format maps. I have never done this myself however.

I would be very interested as well to see realtime GPS data in Basecamp.
All the other programs mentioned earlier don't offer the functions Basecamp does. Birdseye for example.
It should be relatively easy to add that function.
If Garmin doesn't want to do it for free, do it in a Basecamp Pro version.
I would be very versatile in areas were no maps or limited maps are available.
Yes, as Neolite mentioned Basecamp is not a live GPS application. But that could be changed easily if the developers want to.
I know several people here in Kabul who would buy new devices if Basecamp would support that feature

    Kind regards

This is a bit off-topic, but M$ Streets & Trips (about $35) does read data from GPS's, but maybe not from any of the current Garmins.

I have used S&T with my ancient Garmin GPS III Plus, which still works fine--it needs a hard cable with a RS232 to USB adapter.

I also have a small 2" x 3" x 1" GPS (iBlue 737) with no screen, outputs its data via Bluetooth only, holds a battery charge (it gets charged via USB mini from either a putr or a dashboard charger) for over 20 hours.
    here if your interested: http://www.semsons.com/bluetgpsrec.html

GoogleEarth has a live mode. Not sure if that's what you are looking for or not though.

I need a solution where I don't need to be online and where the imagery is quite current. The Google earth imagery is usually to old.
All in all Basecamp would be a very good solution if it would support realtime GPS.
It's very convenient to be able to combine the Garmin Maps with the BirdsEye imagery.
An other approach would be to incorporate the BirdsEye function into Mobile PC.
