BaseCamp 3.1.1 and Window arrangement

It seems that the detailed list window and object details are now the same. (My Collection)

This splits the screen fixed into 4 parts where map or object details are getting too less viewable array.

But pictures tell more than words in this case.

Old style:

Current and new style

This is not an improvement in my opinion. Design choice or bug?

    To understand the phenomena of the list of data items now showing up in a horizontal split view, try out the new user data management features explained in this post.

    The list of data items used to be just a list before, now it does a lot more and shows a lot more information. For example, in your screenshot, if you click on the icon with the waypoint symbol and the 15 next to it, you will see how you are now able to see detailed information on each of your items without having to bring up its properties.

    Also, for those who don't like the default layout they can resize the layout. If you hover your mouse close to the edge of the lists, you will notice the cursor changing; you can then drag the mouse to make the lists smaller or larger. See screenshot:

  • Some great improvements in this version, notably faster.

    It would be great if some consideration could be given to make the bottom "detail" panel / tab dockable or even as a "tear off" to place it on another monitor for those with dual monitor setups.

    But having the detail panel at the bottom works for me. I just had a look at a pocket query (GPX file) downloaded from Geocaching .com - awesome. Don't know if this level of detail was available in the previous version, but is is simply great !!!

    This new function is indeed very handy, but it's not possible to brows normally through my data in a list. If i want that i have to resize all including the maps, which is on a slow computer something you don't want.

    Problem is that if i search something, i am most of the time forgotten if it is a route or a track what i am searching for. At this moment browsing is much faster than searching ;)

    My human brain is very good in recognising words/patterns from the screen and very good in processing this kind of "image" information. My PC however is only showing me what I type and does not do advanced recognition ;)
  • Apologies for the hijack, but it is slightly relevant.

    Using the screenshot in Marco's first post entitiled "Current and new style" :
    How would I get ONLY the data in the lists Birds Eye and Video Route to display? My reason for wanting to do this is that some of the data in various lists overlaps and clutters the screen.

    @Andyt1
    Thank you for the encouragement.
    Regarding more dual monitor support, that is an area where we can add more features. Dockable/tear off windows, in particular, is not necessarily something we are considering to address this. You seem to be quite proficient with those advanced behaviors; Unfortunately there are a lot of users who haven't seen that behavior before. They would be railing at me if they accidently lost a window ;-)

    @MarcoPietersma
    With respect to manual browsing of the type you described, if you want to continue to see a bigger map, I agree with you that there is a change there. I would encourage you to try out the new features and see if you really need to see a big list of user data and a big map at the same time anymore. For example, previously, to find some waypoint, you would have the big list on the left and manually browse through the list. Here are some new options you have to find the waypoint faster:

    1. You would click on the button that filters Waypoints to make it a much smaller list.
    2. If you remember the name, you can start typing the name in the search box and let it find it for you
    3. If you remember something about the property of the waypoint, like its elevation or date, you can sort the list to find it faster.
    4. You can click the Next/Previous buttons to browse through the list.
    5. If all else fails, you can revert to performing a manual browse like you did before, except that now the list is smaller.

    We want you to find your data faster, and I'm hoping that these changes have been a net gain for you. I'd love to hear back from you once you've played with these new features to let us know if it made your life easier.

    I also notice speed improvements: nice work. The data panel does require a different mindset--I find myself constantly adjusting it depending on what I'm doing. But search, filter and sort abilities are worth it to me.

    I was thinking that toggling full-screen mode on and off might work. I could then adjust the panel for convenient viewing of data, hit F11 for map work, then hit it again to go back. But in full screen mode, the toolbar disappears and I don't see any keyboard shortcuts--making it difficult to draw tracks, put down waypoints, etc.. Having the toolbar, shortcuts, or both in full-screen mode would be useful.

    One possible bug: if the BaseCamp window is maximized and I toggle off full screen mode, the restored window cuts off the filter icons and search box, that is, they appear partially blocked by the Windows toolbar . At least that's what I'm seeing using Vista.

    @FRITZ_NEWTON,
    See separate post I created to answer your question on using tools with full screen mode.

    The icons getting cut off is something I was not aware of. It doesn't happen in the Vista machines I've tried it on. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] with a link to this discussion so that we can troubleshoot this.
  • What Fritz is seeing also happens on my machine - Win XP 64 bit.
    Will send a mail as well.

    A few cold reboots later, and my F11 key doesn't do full screen mode...or anything else. The View menu does, but the only way I see to revert it is by killing the app with Task Manager. I assume it's something in my configuration, but can't figure out the cause. I'm running Vista, fully up to date, dual screens, on the primary screen.

    So, no full screen for me, for the time being. But thanks for noting the shortcut keys. They could still be useful. Another good one to know: "s" = select.

    @Fritz,
    Vista stores application layout information at
    C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\GARMIN_Corp

    It is possible that somehow it got messed up. Try deleting that folder. It will be recreated the next time you launch. You will lose your layout preferences.
