newbie question - mountain heights & elevation profile

Hi, new owner of an Oregon 450t and the Republic of Ireland 1:50k Discoverer map. Downloaded Basecamp 3.0.6 (Windows 7) and created my first route but the heights in the elevation profile do not seem to match the spot heights on the map, they are all 20+ metres lower! Anyone come across this before?

Example image attached showing a waypoint at summit of height 773m but the elevation profile is at 731m.

Thanks.

EDIT: after experimenting with both the Ireland and UK Discoverer 1:50k maps I'm finding that If I try and put a waypoint at the summit of any given mountain, the waypoint's height is recorded too low. This happens both on my Oregon 450t and Basecamp so I can't get create a waypoint on the summit of Carrantuohill that reads close to 1040 metres. I'm new to GPS mapping so not sure if that's just to be accepted or not!

With raster maps, this is to be expected. Unfortunately, there could be small differences between the raster map and vector data.

Thanks for that NeoLite, so if I want to plan a mountain walking route in advance with an elevation profile I'll have to manually enter the correct heights myself?

I found the same problem at this useful website... http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php ...try and put a waypoint on the summit of Snowdon and get it to read 1085m! Nearest I could get was 1038m.

I've actually used the Oregon on one route in Ireland already and was pretty happy with the results. Took the altitude from the GPS map at the start of the walk around 150m and found it was spot on later at the summits (800m +).
