Basecamp - Filtered Routes

Hi
A dumb question - can anyone explain what these are used for? The Help Manual tells me that, when drawing a map by Filtered Route, Basecamp generates waypoints that are not saved in the Library and Devices area, but why would I want to create a filtered route instead of a track or ordinary route?

The two main use cases for filtered route are:
    • You want a route over a road/trail that can't be auto-routed (or the device doesn't support auto-routes). Also, the device may support only a limited number of waypoints. Filtered routes allow you to create a route that approximates the road/trail within the waypoint limit of your device without having to manually create every waypoint.
    • You want to have a waypoint created after an interval along your route, similar to distance marker signs along a trail. This interval can be every 1/4 mile, every 1/2 km, etc. Filtered routes allow you to create routes with waypoints at specific intervals.

I understand the advantage of the second example. But what's the advantage of the first example versus using a track?
