Basecamp on Win7 x64 doesn't show window

I just bought a new GPSMap 62s and am trying to get Basecamp to work on my computer. I am using version 3.06.

When I start the application, it produces a window asking about BirdsEye. I click "NO" and then a Basecamp icon sits in the task bar, but no application window appears. If I move the mouse over the taskbar icon, I can SOMETIMES see a graphic showing the application window (this is a Windows 7 feature) but selecting that graphic doesn't make the application window appear. If from the taskbar I rightclick and select Close Window, Basecamp exits without any error.

I have 8Gb of ram, and a ATI Radeon 54xx video card. I updated the GPSMap to the most recent firmware. The MapInstall and WebUpdater applications both work, and the myGarmin website features can find the unit when connected to the USB.

Any suggestions?

BaseCamp is REALLY slow to load. Maybe it's still firing up.

On my system it takes about 4 minutes to load all of the data and 3 before it starts to display anything. Once it does load, it’s not too slow to use.

To be fair, I do have 6 map products and a lot of waypoints. Load times will likely be faster with a trim database.

As a comparison, I have about 2000 songs and a lot of movies in iTunes and it loads in 2 seconds.

Just so you know, I am not exaggerating the load times. I timed both and even considered making a video to send to Garmin.

    Good luck

Thanks for the info. I have waited overnight for it to display an application window and it never does.

I think it must be some incompatibility with the windowing manager or video driver or something, because the program is clearly generating the information for the application window since it provides a preview in the windows 7 taskbar. It just never puts up the actual window.

    New information!

If, with basecamp in the task bar highlighted, I hit "Ctrl T" a popup window displays asking to "recenter the map". I've never actually used basecamp, so I think this must be some keyboard shortcut for it.

So Basecamp is actually sitting there processing keyboard input! Maybe it has redrawn its application window to one pixel or somehow placed it outside the monitor's display coordinates?

Does anyone who has actually seen the application window know of a keyboard shortcut to resize the app window?

I would check your video driver out. It needs to be able to run open GL, if I am not mistaken. The default Windows 7 driver on my PC was insufficient for 3D, but ATI had a driver that worked.

Well you have the unlucky honor of a finding problem I've never seen before :)

If the shortcut keys work the app has fully started up so its just a matter of figuring out where the window actually is.

One thing I'm curious about is if this is the first time you've installed BaseCamp or if you had used one of our previous versions. If this was an upgrade its possible that the settings had an error in migration. In that case browse to C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\GARMIN_Corp and delete any of the directories that you find there.

If not (or something to try in either case) would be to right click on the taskbar entry for BC and see if maximizing the app brings it back. Another option would be to do the following.
    • Right click on the app in the task bar
    • Select move
    • Hit an arrow key just once
    • The window should now be "stuck" to the mouse and you can move your mouse freely to reposition the window.
    • Alternatively you can just hold down the arrow key to reposition the window.

Let me know if one or more of those ideas work for you.

As for the performance concerns that is something that we take seriously and are continuously working on improvements.

One thing that we try to do is test against what a user would consider a "large database". If you would be willing to share your data to give us an additional real world example we would appreciate it. You can either send me a PM with an attachment or e-mail [email protected] just put my name in the header so it gets correctly routed to me.

    Fixed!

Your suggestion below regarding the arrow key fixed it!! The window was somehow way off the left side of the monitor so it couldn't be seen. Thanks!!
