Show all tracks?

Howdy, new 62s user and having trouble with differences between 60csx and namely basecamp handling of tracks

I have a large volume of tracks (900+) from a BWCA portage database. each time i go to the BWCA, upload all nearby portages (as tracks) and campsites (as waypoints).

On the 60csx i'd upload the max 20 tracks, and all would neatly display on the map, no need to 'show on map' or anything else.

On the 62s i can upload the max 200 tracks using basecamp, but they are all hidden by default, and i see no way to enable them all in basecamp or otherwise..

also, if i select multiple tracks in basecamp, i cant modify their color, or any other global setting, as a group..

I guess what im getting at is a feature in basecamp to edit/modify general settings for a large number of tracks, including Color and visibility (the ability to specify 'hide on map' or 'show on map'" from within basecamp.

Otherwise we'd need the 62s firmware folks to add a 'show all' in the track manager which doesnt seem likey since im reading oregon users have the same issue.

comments or suggested workarounds for showing all tracks on the map would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hard to believe this problem is still going on. "Show on Map" is a never ending lesson in futility for me! I finally did what Javawa did and just made a map of all my tracks. At first I used Javawa, but I ended up with some files that I had no idea what to do with. There seems to be no directions after you make the files??? Then I tried GPX2IMG.com They have some videos and it basically puts a map right into basecamp then you can enable it and also download to you GPS. Either way, this is an answer for now.
  • There seems to be no directions after you make the files?

    Did you read the manual?

Yeah. That's like stopping at a gas/petrol station and asking for directions :p

I tried!!! I read this (below). Am I missing something.

    How does it work?

You can set a style for POIs and (optionally) a color for tracks for each GPX or GDB file. Split your data in separate GPX or GDB files when you want to have multiple styles. POIs can be provided with additional information (addresses, phone numbers); the easy way to do this is to use the program POImaker.

Drag the GPX or GDB files containing tracks and/or waypoints to the application window. The list shows the number of tracks and/or waypoints in the file. By clicking in the columns 'poi style', 'poi sub style' en 'track color' you will get a popup menu where you can pick a style or color.

When you've set all styles and colors, enter a map ID (or Family ID). This map ID needs to be unique; when you already have a map with this ID on your computer the program lets you know this and gives you (Windows only) the option to remove the other map (only the registry entries, not the files).

Next enter the name of the map (on the computer and on the device they can be different, but you can choose to use the same name twice).

The display of tracks (color, line width) on the computer/in your device is controlled by a TYP file. A few are included, but you can create your own with a TYP editor. More about this below.

Finally, click on the button 'Create map'. You have to select the folder where the map files will be placed.

IMGfromGPX performs a check on the tracks; track segments shorter than 1 metre will be merged.
  • That's the text from my website, not from the manual... The page on my website doesn't contain the complete manual.

Ok, Started the program went to help and there it is. The text is very similar so I overlooked the fact that there was more there. Thank you I will give it a shot.

I'm having a related problem and hoping for some help: i've loaded a series of tracks to my 78s and selected "show on map" for each but only a single track (located using Find) appears - none of the other surrounding tracks are visible. Have double checked that each track is set to show on map in Track Manager. Have restarted unit. No luck. I realize that i can create a map but isn't this just supposed to work??
    Thanks!

How do we get the attention of the firmware folks? Having uploaded tracks hidden by default is monumentally stupid. How about a firmware upgrade that gives us one of the following solutions:
    1. Let us select whether the default will be "Show on Map" or "Hide on Map".
    2. Give us a "Select all Tracks" button so we can select all the tracks at once, and then punch "Show on Map".
    3. Just change the damned default to show tracks.

The 60 and 76 models worked great for our fieldwork. The replacement 62 and 78 models do not. The touch-screen models work even less-well for our applications. It seems like Garmin went out of their way to make the new units as difficult to use as possible for professionals working in the field. Not everyone needs sub-meter GPS units for fieldwork, and the Garmins were a very cost-effective solution. But I can no longer recommend our field crews buy new Garmins to replace their old 60's. If the situation is not resolved, we will be looking elsewhere.

Who can I personally contact at Garmin to see if they even care?
  • Well I'll agree with the option to enable tracks to be shown if required, but I suspect many folks won't want all tracks shown as a 'default'
