Downloading and transfering Birdseye images to mSD card without GPS connected.

Is there any way to transfer Birdseye imagery to a micro SD card in Basecamp without having to have the actual GPS itself (62st) connected to the system? I'd like to take advantage of the faster transfer speeds I could achieve with a card reader, and connecting the GPS to the system seems to bog Basecamp down more than if it's not connected.

On a similar note, is there any way to download Birdseye imagery without having the GPS connected? Again, Basecamp runs slower with the GPS connected, and I'd like to be able to continue using the GPS while BE images are downloading.

Thanks,

Larry

you need to find the Garmin Device file on your gps and copy it to the msd card, then you can transfer files without having the gps connected. For downloading birdseye images, you can disconnect the gps once the download has started.

On my Colorado the GarminDevice file is in the Garmin folder on the device itself. copy/paste to the card.

I accidentally discovered that once I used Basecamp to transfer some files to the card with the gps connected, Basecamp automatically started "seeing" that card in a card reader without the GPS connected, allowing me to transfer to it without the gps. I would assume that this applied to BE imagery as well, but I have not tested it yet. Note that "downloading" BE imagery from the server, however, still requires the GPS to be connected.

If I copy that file over as you described, are you saying that I'll be able to download BE imagery without the gps connected? Are there any potential issues with this? My fear would be that if copying that file over makes Basecamp see both the gps AND the card as the same device, it could cause problems.

On the same note, if I put that file on one of my hard drives, does that mean that Basecamp would see my hard drive as a gps? If so, does this mean I could download BE imagery to my hard drive without any special card (or the gps itself) connected?

Just out of curiosity, why does Basecamp require the gps to be connected just to download BE imagery from the server? You still need a subscription to upload the files to a gps, so why prevent us from downloading the images to the system via Basecamp without the gps connected? I don't see why anybody without a Garmin GPS would EVER want to utilize BE imagery given that Google Earth offers a much more detailed and VASTLY more usable service for just looking at sat imagery. Why the extra hurdle just to download images from the server?

    Thanks,

    Larry

the GarminDevice file will only let you transfer files (including BE) from basecamp to the sd card with the card in a reader, you don't need it to be in the gps. I have not had any issues with this setup, I still use the sd card, with the device file on it in my gps and it works fine.

It will not allow you download BE images from the Garmin servers. With my Colorado, once I start a BE download, I can disconnect the Colorado from the computer and the download will continue.

Users without a BirdsEye subscription can only download a single limited size demo section. The subscribed device needs to be connected when you start your download so that we don't delete any other existing imagery.

I'm not sure I follow you here. Why would existing imagery ever be deleted by Basecamp? Are you saying that there are situations where Basecamp might automatically delete downloaded imagery? How does this effect situations where a new gps is plugged into a system that already has a lot of BE imagery downloads, such as when you upgrade to a new unit? You'd obviously want to keep the existing files -- don't you just need to buy a new license for the new unit? Is there some order you need to do this to prevent deleting all the current imagery?

    Thanks,

I can't speak for other gps's, but with the 62st it appears that this file is no longer needed for this. I did not copy this file over, and it does not appear on my sd card, yet once I transferred some files to my sd card via BC, I was able to transfer files directly to the card without the gps connected.

Sorry for the confusion. BaseCamp will not delete any subscribed BirdsEye files. There can be only a single demo file that is created without a subscription.
