Custom map display distorted

When I look at my custom maps in BaseCamp I notice that they are stretched horizontally.

It's the same for the Recreational Map Europe v3.

It just looks like the whole map display is being stretched horizontally.

I suspect it's because my screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10 instead of the old "normal" 4:3.
Can this program not handle wide screen displays?

It also doesn't seem to match up the tiles very well. There are very noticeable parts where they are shifted up/down/left/right - but I've not noticed this on the Garmin device itself.

There shouldn't be any reason that your display would affect how the maps are drawn. The majority of our monitors at our office are widescreen and I've just checked now on my home machine that is 1680x1050 and I don't notice distortion.

I'm probably just not looking for the right cues, or its possible I'm just so used to how our maps display since I stare at them all day :)

Is is possible to take a screenshot that demonstrates the issue?

Here is a screen shot. As you can see the UK is stretched widthways compared to the correct ratio as seen in the overlaid screen shot from google maps.

    My screen is also 1680x1050.

It looks like you've encountered the same projection issue that other users have reported for Map Source (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=2475).

Because the Recreational Map of Europe appears to contain the entire world at a lower level of detail we aren't choosing a good projection angle and default back to 35 degrees.

One thing you can do it set it to a more appropriate angle for this product via the registry. Checking out our City Navigator Europe map the calculated angle is about 50 degrees so I'd start with that.

Here's the rec map of Europe after changing the projection to 50.

I've attached a reg file (just remove the .txt extension) that should update the projection angle in the registry for Recreational Map Europe v3.01 to 50 degrees. If you would like to make adjustments for other map products check out this post but instead use the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\SharedSettings\Products

    Hi,

I tried putting that value in the registry using your file - but it made no difference.

It definitely updated the registry because I looked at it before and after, and the value is now there.

However I did notice that before running the .reg file there was no product with that number (4286177153) in the SharedSettings/Products key. Should there have been?

That product number does show up in the BaseCamp keys, though:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\BaseCamp\Settings\Products\4286177153

I tried adding the ProjectionAngle in there too, but again it makes no difference to my display.

I've manually added the ProjectionAngle key at 45 degrees to the three products listed under Basecamp, (and for good measure to the Shared Settings) but just like before, the PC basemap, and Global map have the distortion (too wide) and the Northwest Trails map is correct.

Sorry if there was confusion on this. Between the orignal post on the MapSource forums and now we've changed this up a little bit.

For every map product you use in BaseCamp there will be a key written in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\BaseCamp\Settings\Products. This stores the lat/lon you were viewing as well as rotation, tilt, zoom, etc.

The keys at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\SharedSettings\Products will only be added if you need to change the projection angle. In the future we may put other cross-application settings in that location but there is nothing else now.

To get the projection angle setting to be applied you need to add a key with the same number as found under BaseCamp settings. The easiest way to figure out which number corresponds to which product is just to delete all the BC Product settings and then start back up seeing which is added as you change maps.

The updated directions are as follows:

    • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\SharedSettings\Products
    • Create the new key with the product ID number
    • Now create a new DWORD key 'ProjectionAngle' under the product key.
    • Then modify that key to set the projection angle in degrees
    • Restart BaseCamp for the setting to take effect

Alternatively if the product you would like to tweak is a desktop install (as opposed to a SD card / device product) you can set this value via the Ctrl-Alt-A key sequence in MapSource and BaseCamp will also pick up the setting.

    That worked, thank you!

    I've set that ProjectionAngle in

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Garmin\SharedSettings\Products\133758977

and that has now fixed the distortion - thanks.

However I still have a problem with tiles on my custom map not lining up very well.

I have scanned part of one of my OS maps and used MAPC2MAPC to cut it into 1024x1024 tiles - but as you can see from the screen shot they do not line up properly on the screen.

    " />">

In the very centre is a hole - if the tiles were moved to remove this hole it looks like the roads would also line up.

There is no problem like this on the Garmin Oregon. When I look at the same region of the map the roads all line up and there is no hole.

This makes it pretty tricky to add accurate waypoints, as you don't know which part of the map is correct.

Is this custom map rotated (even a tiny bit)?

My Oregon handles rotated maps great, but BaseCamp does not.
