Basecamp errors – Error messages and data not being saved in My Collection

I have downloaded data from my Edge 1030 plus into my collection in the Basecamp library and created a backup but after closing Basecamp and then restarting my data in in neither the My Collection nor available when trying to restore the data.  I have received error messages during these processes.

I reinstalled version 4.7.5 twice.

On the second reinstall the error message Cannot transfer 1. Waypoints, 2. Routes, 3 tracks appeared just aftre Basecamp opened.  I connected my device, downloaded/received data from my device which appeared in my collection.  I created a restore point and the file appeared.

I shutdown and restarted Basecamp but there was no data in My Collection but the Basecamp Initialization window appeared and indicated it could not load the “List Data File”.  If I don’t fix the data Basecamp simply closes.  If I fix the data, there are no files restored in My Collection.

Side note:  I recently made the mistake of using Microsoft MyCloud resulting in all my data being removed from my Windows PC and being placed on the cloud but in many cases the cloud folders were simply empty windows.  I repeated the process and had duplicates in several locations.  I ended up deleting all the files on the cloud and used a backup from a separate drive to reload my PC.  So my file structure was probably comprimised during that process.  The reloading of Basecamp occurred after the reloading of my PC files from the backup location.  At some point I hope to try to recover many of my old Garmin files.

  • I sounds like your Basecamp database file got corrupted.  Consider creating a new database and the testing to see if it will store data from your Edge 1030.  Adding a database is in Edit > Options > General.

FWIW, the default database is located in %AppData%\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\Database\4.7.  It is made up of two files.  AllData.gdb holds the data.  FolderData.gfi holds the Folder and List structure.  AFAIK, these don't get deleted by an uninstall so will get reused by a new installation.  Deleting them will allow you to start from scratch (renaming them might be better, at least until you know you don't need them).  New ones will be created when Basecamp starts up, or perhaps when first data entry and folder structure is made.

  • I renamed the Alldata.gdb and FolderData.gfi files (thanks for that info) before adding a new database.  Basecamp restarted but with an error report:

The following items cannot be transferred:

    1. Waypoints
    2. Routes
    3. Tracks

Either the GPS does not support the items or Basecamp needs to be upgraded… (the screen closed before I could get the rest).  On restarting Basecamp identified a problem:

External component has thrown and exception: and several lines appeared in the Problem Description.  I submitted at the error report and provided my e-mail address with the report ([email protected]).  some of the lines indicated

    at gfi.AppDatabase_t.SaveData(appDatabse_t*)

    at bc MainForm_t.Shutdown(Boolean aSaveUserData)

    at bc MainForm_t.OnFormClosed (FormClosedEventArgs e)

    at System.Windows.Forms.Form.WmClose(Message& m)

    at bcMainForm_t.WndProc(Message& aMessage)

    at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.OnMessage(Message& m)

    at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc((Message& m)

at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.DebuggableCallback (IntPtr hWnd. Int32msg. IntPtr wparam, IntPtr Iparam)

It went on from there.  The database name appeared but did not contain any files.

Restarting Basecamp and initialization error displayed:

    Canot load the following areas:

List data file.  Cancelling it did nothing and fixing the data resulted in empty files and nothing to restore.

    Thank you

I found an old discussion here (https://www.gpspower.net/garmin-discussions/340172-basecamp-keeps-crashing.html ) where this error occurred when the device was connected but not in Mass Storage (MTP) mode.  This makes me wonder whether the problem is not in the Basecamp database but in the communication between the Edge and Basecamp, especially if Basecamp appears to work until the Edge is connected.

Perhaps a post in the Edge 1030 forum would be worth a try.

  • Basecamp can see my device, receive a transfer and indicates a successful backup was made.  The first error comes when I try to close Basecamp.  On my PC I can see my Garmin and its files.  Would I be able to do that if it wasn't in Mass Storage (MTP) mode?  I didn't see anything about how to change storage mode, how do I do that?

I did look at the properties of my Edge as saw the following (amongst several other lines):

Device settings for USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Garmin&Prod_GARMIN_Flash&Rev_1.00\9&2f8fa7e6&6 were not migrated from previous OS installation due to partial or ambiguous device match.

I went to Garmin Express and it indicated everything was up to date.  I am not sure what to do to try to remedy the migration or ambiguous match items.  Is there a way to save the limited data on my device before tying some kind of hard reset of my Edge?  (How would I do that?)

PS- I did post this in the Edge 1030 Plus forum as well.

  • Not that it really matters if you're in agreement with each other on what "mode" the Garmin is in but the terminology used here is being mixed up. Mass Storage Mode and MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) are two different things.
