BirdsEye - download size limited to only about 76 MB

I am seeing new download limit being enforced by BirdsEye download servers - only 76MB instead of about 307MB I was getting so far (highest quality).

Is this new attempt to improve the performance?! Ideal would be to limit the size to 1MB or less, that would make everybody abandon the feature and download servers would be finally fast .

Anyone else seeing this new limit?

I don't see any confusion or conflict - sorry. Here is the quote you provided:

"Transfer an unlimited number of satellite and aerial images to your device with this subscription"

It does not mention downloading files to your computer. That sentence is about transferring images to your device, and it is correct. You can transfer an unlimited number of images to your device. They did not say "download files of unlimited size".

There is no limit to the amount of images that you can download or transfer to your device.

    Hi again,

sorry, but thats a little bit confusing for me.

You wrote "They did not say "download files of unlimited size"."

Ok, I agree. But a file has a predefined size. The size is given by the file itself. I cannot change the file-size and I also cannot make the filesize bigger as it is.

I can only change the quality: Normal, High, Highest which is resulting in filesize per nature.

About displaying on the computer. Before sending the images to the device I want check them in BaseCamp. Its not possible? I guess the quality in BaseCamp is the same then like on the device.

Currently I dont have a compatible GPS unit. But I intent to purchase a 62/78 series and use it with BirdsEye together. But I want to know if there are images for my area of operation. I have already 5 Garmin GPS units ... thats why I want to check it first :).

And ... please Garmin, give more detailed technical data of your products.

    Regards,
    Paul

Sorry, you lost me with that, and honestly it isn't worth arguing about.

You need to have a supported device before you can try BirdsEye. If you do, (such as the GPSMap 62 or 78 that you plan to buy) just connect it to your computer and start BirdsEye. The program will recognize it and ask if you want to use BirdsEye, then it will prompt you for what to do.

Aside from all the complaining, I think you need to give Garmin credit here. You can download as much BirdsEye data as you like on your computer even if you don't have a subscription. It will work fine in BaseCamp and will be displayed at full resolution when you zoom all the way in.

So you can try BirdsEye without buying it, as long as you have a compatible GPS. That's what I did. In fact, I had already downloaded quite a bit of imagery before I subscribed. After I subscribed, I was able to unlock all of it and install on my Oregon.

Without a subscription, you can only send a small sample 1 mile x 1 mile image to your GPS (it seems to come from the middle of the downloaded area). But this gives you a chance to see how it will look on your GPS before buying.

BaseCamp only lets you zoom in to the 80 foot range but I can zoom in to 20 feet on my Oregon. This is not an issue really - at 80 feet you can already see every pixel of the image. At 20 feet it just looks big and blocky.

Bird's Eye was already pretty useless but with this download limit it becomes totally useless. I am downloading some imagery from Laos. Some places have no highest detail content. The selection box presumes availability of highest detail content when calculating the size, but when actually downloading I only get about 95 tiles i.s.o. 5000.
Most annoying: Lowest resolution is not shown by default. (Like Google Earth does with even its highest detail content)

    disappointing

I am very disappinted so far by the basecamp software and the performance of the download servers.

I don't understand why the user needs to chop up the pieces into downloadable chunks that fit in the limit set by Garmin. I'd like to simply select an area of the map and have Basecamp figure out the rest.

I don't think Basecamp was ready to launch at the time Garmin did and started charging for it. I hope the one year timer will be reset once Garmin has fixed the UI and the backend service.

    BaseCamp is free.

    BirdsEye is not free.

you are correct but it does not make basecamp or birdseye any better.
