Adding track segment adds a return line

Hi, I'm using downloaded .gpx files for my bike rides. Some are incomplete, so i add the extra sections. But when i Add a track, and then "Join" them to create a single track, I get an unwanted line connecting the 2 endpoints in a straight line--most of the time.
I'm careful to "draw" the new track going the same direction as the existing one. I put the "end" of my new track, over the end of the existing track--at least as close as i can get it.

How can i avoid this? Since it sometimes does not do it, there must be some "rule" it follows.

Attached is an example.

Not only does the direction of the track matter, but the join order itself. In BaseCamp, before you actually "commit" the join, you get a window showing the two tracks to be joined. That specifies the order, which you can change. If one way doesn't work, undo it (ctr-Z) and try the other. (Just tried it. Looks like you can also toggle the order by selecting one of the tracks in the box, and then on the hooked-shape arrow.)

Fritz, thanks much for the reply. You're correct--it does make a difference which track is Joined to the other. I guess that is why sometimes it worked and others it did not.

    Thanks again, Ron
