Upgrading a laptop's Intel video card drivers

Unfortunately a number of laptop manufacturers seem to drop support for their products as soon as the first one leaves the factory.

Because of this the updated drivers that Intel puts out for their graphics chips don't ever get rolled out to users. Problems that have been fixed for months or years linger forever on the laptop because the drivers themselves are months or years old. The following steps will help you update the to the Intel provided drivers for your laptop.

At the time that this guide was written the best way to find the drivers for your laptop were to visit http://downloadcenter.intel.com/. Select "Graphics" from the product family. "Laptop graphics controllers" from the product line and then choose the correct adapter from product name. Before proceeding please download the files for your video card in zip format and unzip them to a known location. For these instructions the file was unzipped to C:\winvista_15124.

The process as described below was done on a laptop with the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset running Windows Vista (32 bit). The screen shots may not match up exactly for other operating systems or cards.
