Basecamp VERY Slow

It's almost unusable. I'm running Windows 7 64bit with an nVidia GTX 275 video card, 6 GB of Corsair Dominator RAM, 300GB 10,000RPM WD VelociRaptor HD and an Intel I7 920 processor. My system should handle this with no problem, however, the basecamp software is almost unusable while panning, zooming, or just navigating on the map. I get lots of freezes (it will say "NOT RESPONDING") for up to 2 minutes and then start working again. I am able to download birdseye maps and I'm also able to load them to my garmin Oregon 550 with no problem, but I DO get an error that says unable to connect to my SD card on the oregon, (even though it connects) I'm using the latest release of Basecamp that I downloaded 2 days ago. Also, I have installed the same software onto my secondary desktop and have the exact same issues. I am going to try to install it onto my 3rd desktop which is running XP 32bit SP3. Will see if it makes any difference. Garmin .... can you please look into this? I am going to Colorado in a few months to hike Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. I'll be heartbroken if I can't get this software to function properly before my trip. Thanks
  • Run Express and under Map Options select Install to PC. This assumes you didn't get the map supplied on a card or via a one off download? If you did there are other ways so let me know.

Hi, I've been using Basecamp for about 3 days now, I bought some topo maps of europe off ebay and they seem to be pretty decent (not quite as good as the overpriced Garmin ones though).

It's also running a bit slow on my PC, I can navigate the map while zoomed in without many problems. But when I try to create a track, every new point requires 10-20 seconds to load (always get the "Not Responding" message and then it loads again).

It's annoying and time consuming, I could probably walk the distance I map out in less time than I plan it haha. Luckily for me I'm only planning long distance hiking trails, and as a lot of these are already mapped out on waymarkedtrails.org I just download the gpx. files and edit them to my liking (removing points, inverting track direction, joining etc.)
It takes a lot less time, so it could be worth searching for the routes you want online first to see if anyone has already mapped it out for you. If you go on to the waymarked trails site, you can zoom into an area, click "Routes", then a list of mapped out routes will show up.

So anyway, the only reason I'm here is because I thought it was just me having this problem so I looked it up and seems like it's been going on for a few years so I guess we just have to suck it up and accept it. I suppose Garmin could create some sort of Premium Basecamp and sell it/include it with devices, because something should be done about this problem.

Another way around it is to create your routes/tracks in Google Maps then download the kml. file (need to have a google account to do so), and import it into Basecamp, I've used that method a couple times and it's worked perfectly.
  • Only time I see any delay is if I'm editing a track with hundreds of points, then there is a slight delay if I delete a point. Otherwise Basecamp isn't slow at all. If you're experiencing problems simply creating a track I'd try uninstalling then reinstalling Basecamp as something is wrong in your system somewhere.

I have CN North America NT 2014.40 on an SD card inside my Monterra. Is it possible to install that on my PC? If so, how?
  • You can either copy the files to a SD card or memory stick so Basecamp reads the map off that. Or set up a virtual drive:
