It's almost unusable. I'm running Windows 7 64bit with an nVidia GTX 275 video card, 6 GB of Corsair Dominator RAM, 300GB 10,000RPM WD VelociRaptor HD and an Intel I7 920 processor. My system should handle this with no problem, however, the basecamp software is almost unusable while panning, zooming, or just navigating on the map. I get lots of freezes (it will say "NOT RESPONDING") for up to 2 minutes and then start working again. I am able to download birdseye maps and I'm also able to load them to my garmin Oregon 550 with no problem, but I DO get an error that says unable to connect to my SD card on the oregon, (even though it connects) I'm using the latest release of Basecamp that I downloaded 2 days ago. Also, I have installed the same software onto my secondary desktop and have the exact same issues. I am going to try to install it onto my 3rd desktop which is running XP 32bit SP3. Will see if it makes any difference. Garmin .... can you please look into this? I am going to Colorado in a few months to hike Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. I'll be heartbroken if I can't get this software to function properly before my trip. Thanks
My problem is similar in many ways, but different. This is what I'm doing:
I'm using BaseCamp 3.1.2. I have 2GB of RAM, using Windows 7 Home Premium. I want to view the watershed of western NY, and the only way I can see it (zoomed out) is to make a track of each creek, and there are many of them. As I make the track (zoomed in) along the blue line of the creek, the app get slower and slower the longer the track is. As an example, one creek is 6.2 miles long, leaving 2472 data points to define the track. At the end of the track I'm making, the update of the screen requires a few (maybe 3) seconds to fill in. The longer the creek is, the longer the update time requires. Also, when I delete a track, occasionally the app closes, requesting a description of what I did (delete a track) and my email address so Garmin can contact me. I have never heard from Garmin.
Running BaseCamp 3.1.3 on Windows 7 64. BaseCamp is extreamely slow. Just trying to get the options up I get a message from Windows that "Options has stopped responding", though it eventually does show up. This machine has an i7 920 CPU and 16 GB of memory. Only 19% of the memory is being used. I've got an NVidia card with 1GB of dedicated memory. I'm not running out of resources.
However, running BaseCamp on Windows 7 64 in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode, it runs fine and performs fine except I get asked if I want to Allow BaseCamp to modify my computer each time I run it.
I suspect the error is somewhere within your setup. I haven't experienced a slow running Basecamp for longer than I can now remember, although it can take a few moments to display a map when detail is set to Highest :)
Basecamp very slow.. always not responding .. My system should handle this with no problem, however, the basecamp software is almost unusable while panning, zooming, or just navigating on the map. I get lots of freezes. What i need to do ? what is problem? My computer is Macbook pro i7 16Gb Ram
Having the same issue. I have the latest version of Basecamp running on Windows 7 x64. I have a Garmin Nuvi 295w with updated 2014 base maps and the Topo 2008 micro SD installed as well. When I open Basecamp with the GPS connected, it automatically starts "importing" or "receiving" from the GPS. It is a TON of data that keeps scrolling over to the left. It just never stops. Im not really sure what it is trying to import... Is there a way to disable this automatic receive? I am assuming that is the cause of the problem. Basecamp then locks up and become unresponsive.
**Correction** I just started Basecamp without the Nuvi 295w plugged in, and after about 30 seconds or so, Basecamp starts "downloading" or "receiving" tons and tons and tons of data over on the left side. (the upper window) What the heck???? How do I stop this? What is it receiving???
It's not importing, it's indexing the maps. It only needs to do so once but it seems like you're either not allowing it to complete or there may be a problem with the topo map. Try removing the card. Now does BC run ok?
Removing it now to test. It does this though regardless of whether or not I have the GPS connected to the PC or not. As soon as I start Basecamp, about 1 minute, it starts "indexing" the maps on its own. Why? After about 4 minutes of it doing this, it becomes unresponsive and freezes. How long should the indexing take? I waited almost 30 minutes this morning and it just sat there. I am removing the SD card now and will try to test it that way. Give me just a minute.... ...Oh, and THANKS for the quick reply. :)
Still doing the same thing even with the Topo Maps card removed. I also tried it without the GPS connected and it still does the same thing. What is the Map indexing for? Can it be disabled? I am trying to upload a screenshot to show you, but it keeps failing. (no explanation as to why) I have reduced the image down to 34kb as a jpeg and it still fails. Anyway, what can I do to resolve this?
**Update** I am letting Basecamp still run as suggested...and it is still frozen. Additionally, what is the issue with uploading images on a reply? I click the "Insert image" icon, and select the file, and then click upload...but nothing happens. It just sits there. No matter what I do. Odd...??
