Basecamp VERY Slow

It's almost unusable. I'm running Windows 7 64bit with an nVidia GTX 275 video card, 6 GB of Corsair Dominator RAM, 300GB 10,000RPM WD VelociRaptor HD and an Intel I7 920 processor. My system should handle this with no problem, however, the basecamp software is almost unusable while panning, zooming, or just navigating on the map. I get lots of freezes (it will say "NOT RESPONDING") for up to 2 minutes and then start working again. I am able to download birdseye maps and I'm also able to load them to my garmin Oregon 550 with no problem, but I DO get an error that says unable to connect to my SD card on the oregon, (even though it connects) I'm using the latest release of Basecamp that I downloaded 2 days ago. Also, I have installed the same software onto my secondary desktop and have the exact same issues. I am going to try to install it onto my 3rd desktop which is running XP 32bit SP3. Will see if it makes any difference. Garmin .... can you please look into this? I am going to Colorado in a few months to hike Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. I'll be heartbroken if I can't get this software to function properly before my trip. Thanks

Have just started using BaseCamp with my new Garmin 450T. Have been trying to transfer tracks from a trek to my laptop to make a little diary. Am using SwissTopo as my map in BaseCamp. The laptop is well-equipped (see below) and works fast when, for example, editing video clips. It has numerous AV defences and is frequently deep-scanned for viruses.

When transferring tracks from the Garmin and editing them BaseCamp constantly freezes for short periods, e.g. 2-10 seconds, occasionally 30 seconds, as if it were beavering away at something in the background, but there is no hourglass or other indication telling me to wait. So sometimes I don't notice that it is in this "freeze" state and I perform the next edit action (e.g. a mouse-click or a drag or a delete) and then suddenly it completes the previous action and the result is a total mix-up on the map.

Would appreciate any leads as to how this problem can be solved.

Laptop details:
2.00 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
4096 kilobyte secondary memory cache
System is 64-bit ready (dixit Microsoft)
Multi-core (2 total)
Not hyper-threaded
Memory: 4gb installed memory, 3456 megabytes usable
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics
Windows 7 64-bit

Where does Basecamp put the maps it's downloading. Are they in a temporary directory or what? I've not been able to locate them as yet.

Thanks

Never mind, I found it. 67 gig hiding in there.

In case anyone runs out of disk space like I did.. Basecamp does NOT delete the map files when you click on delete. It removes them from the Basecamp page but leaves you with a quickly filling disk. I was using it to download Birdseye maps and ran out of room even though I was deleting the maps after moving them to cards. They are hidden in Documents & Settings/name/Application Data/GARMIN/Basecamp.

I just deleted the whole Basecamp program directory after downloading what I needed. It's STILL deleting.... I'll reinstall Basecamp next time I need maps but that's an issue that needs fixed.....

I just recently updated my computer from 1.6Ghz P4 768mb RAM, old Radeon 64mb video card to 3.0Ghz P4, 2GB RAM 500mb Nvidia video card. I had hoped this would help the performance of Basecamp, while it helped some it is still painfully slow, just switching from one birdseye image to another can take 30 seconds. I have maybe 4gb of birdseye images installed.

They are hidden in Documents & Settings/'name'/Application Data/GARMIN/Basecamp.

I tried base camp a second time on a fast computer. No joy. It absolutely crawls.

Where is the response from Garmin on this? I tried a second system as well. Basecamp is still RIDICULOUSLY slow as long as more than a few BirdsEye files are downloaded. I have a couple dozen BE files downloaded at this point, and at times it takes a couple MINUTES for the system to respond after simply moving to a different point on the map.

A BC backup file of less than 2 Gigs took several HOURS to create. That's just not acceptable. I can edit HD video on this system using multiple files of more than 2GB in size, and it works totally smoothly. I can navigate all over the world in Google Earth and it works just fine to zoom all the way in to the same or better resolution that BE gives me. I see practically no lag at all when doing this. I try to use BC, however, and even though the imagery is LOCAL, I constantly have to wait MINUTES for the system to respond while navigating.

What's going on, and why isn't anyone from Garmin updating us on the progress of getting this fixed?

Garmin is there any update on this?

I have the same slow moving map on all my systems (Vista and XP).

We have not received reports of the slowness issues lately. This thread was started in April 2010. Since then, we have had multiple releases of BaseCamp that addressed the slowness issues for a number of users. See here and here.

Have you tried the latest version? If you continue to observe slowness, please contact us directly at [email protected] with a link to this discussion.
