In Windows XP, where does BaseCamp maintain the new folders created in the "Library." I have looked in the automatically created MyGarmin folder and in the BaseCamp folder in the Windows Program Files directory, but do not see the names of new folders I created in the BaseCamp Library. Thanks.
The folders created in BaseCamp don't correspond to actual folders on disk. The database files are created in the root of %appdata%\Garmin\BaseCamp in case you'd like to back them up.
You may find the explanation of our design philosophy towards folders posted here helpful.
After reading that the BaseCamp database is stored in the %appdata%\Garmin\BaseCamp folder, I was able to understand why all the data I saved and BirdsEye images I downloaded were lost.
I needed to do a system restore after a software uninstall failed. My system is perfect again, but Windows replaces the %appdata% folder with one from the restore point.
I would like to suggest that the application be modified to store the database document where documents are intended to be stored.
Some of what I archived cannot be replaced.
I would like to make another suggestion.... BaseCamp is very slow when there is a lot of data. I imported several years worth of files from MapSource and BaseCamp crawls.
Rather than having the database load everything, why not have the database point to individual files. This would allow the linking that is implemented for waypoint modification in all lists, plus speed things up dramatically because the database will only need to load the properties that are needed at the time.
The best part is that if the database gets corrupted, the data is not lost.
BaseCamp is a great application but it has a long ways to go. It is very slow and the method it handles and stores data can be improved. You have some great insight for the developers there.
