Transferring route to Garmin Drive 61 now lags after transfer

I have a Garmin Drive 61 that I have had for some time. I create routes on basecamp on almost a daily basis and transfer them to this device and I have never had an issue with it before, but after the recent software update after transferring the route it lags loading the route and I don't know if the issue lies in the device itself or basecamp. I have already done a full reset on the device a few times and that has not fixed the issue. I am at my wits end because if the load is interrupted at all, say the device screen turns off, the route does not load and I have to start the process all over again which is very time consuming and annoying. Someone please help with a solution.

  • I assume this is a software update of your Drive 61? Is the problem with a newly created route in BaseCamp or does it happen with routes that you've previously sent without any issue? I'm also not sure what you mean by lags loading the route?

  • I have had a similar issue in running into limits of how many BaseCamp created routes can be loaded into my current DriveSmart 76 and also on my Nuvi 3597 previously used...  Here is the procedure that seems to resolve the problem.

    Before attempting to download routes..

    1. Power up the GPS and delete all previously stored  routes, Waypoints and especially travel history.... (thinking the core issue is running out of available memory in the GPS during a new download.

    2. Press and Hold the Power Button to completely shut down the GPS.

    3. Plug in the Computer USB cable in and wait until the GPS has fully completed its boot up sequence (on mine indicated by all icons appearing at screen top and the connect to computer (computer ICON appearing brightly, and only then  (depending on unit) tap on the "connect to computer" or whatever needs to be done to make the USB connection to the computer.

    4. Start the Base Camp Application and wait until the GPS icon appears in Basecamp (typically GPS name & "Internal Storage" will be shown.)

    5. Click on the appropriate "list" folder of routes you want to download and choose the "Send data to the listed GPS". The GPS Internal Storage Icon will display a checkmark when download is complete.

    6. Unplug the USB cable from the GPS.

    7. Plug the external power supply cable in to the GPS usb port and the GPS should start the boot up process (the boot progress bar shows up on my DriveSmart 76) not sure about other units.

8.Wait for all ICONs to show up on the GPS before attempting to go to the Route Planner (or whatever icon on your GPS displays all the downloaded routes.

The down loaded routes should be ready to select.

All the above is about maximizing GPS memory to down load routes AND, giving the GPS time to needed to complete the various phases of the download i.e. don't force the unit to try to do things too quickly.

Lastly the more recent Garmin GPSs I have has presented symptoms of running out of available memory during the down load process.  If I try to down load more than 12 -14 routes (limit can vary based on complexity & size of routes being downloaded... the routes simply do not show up in the GPS... I would presume unit ran out of available memory and aborted the download process with no indication given, other than routes don't show up in the GPS...

I've also noticed at times my GPS having lagging response and decided to try turning off some of the likely more GPS CPU intensive funtions e.g. Auto Zoom in particular, setting the map display to North view only, so display isn't constantly updating with rotating map when turning, or changing route direction. I do leave the Bluetooth and WiFi functions turned on as I need them, but that might also be taxing the GPS cpu causing slow respone..... Dan

  • I don't think that this is the issue as I have deleted all data about 5 times now (complete reset of the device). I have tried smaller legs (only about 5 stops), I have even tried using a micro SD card to see if it was a memory issue, but every time when I go to trip planner I get the little spinning icon and it sits there an spins for a good minute or 2 before the trip that I send to the device from basecamp to actually show up. As I mentioned before, before the last update (software), I did not have any issues and to be honest there were times I would have quite a few stops and the device would handle them like a champ. I have tried all of these things that you have suggested as well as this is not my first Garmin device so I have figured out from trial and error what typically works and those same things worked for my Drive 51 before it went kaput. I am an inspector and make several stops per day and this makes my life easier when figuring out my routes so I am a little frustrated that all of a sudden this is happening, but if worse comes to worse I have a Drive 53 that I bought, but I really don't want to have to use it because the screen is so much smaller and the interface is slightly different than the other devices and I hate change.

  • Sounds like device is faulty then.
